EDINBORO, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University softball team lost both games of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division doubleheader at Edinboro University Thursday. SRU was one out away from taking game one of the matchups, but lost 10-9 in extra innings. The Rock were then shut out by the Fighting Scots in game two, 5-0.
SRU had a six-run lead in the in the top of the sixth inning, but Edinboro made a comeback and eventually put the game in to extra innings. Slippery Rock's best performer in the contest turned out to be
Megan Brown who had three singles and three stolen bases.
In game two, The Rock mustered just three hits and allowed five runs in the sixth inning getting shut out by Edinboro.
With the losses, Slippery Rock is now 16-23 overall and is 6-8 in PSAC West games. The Rock are now two games behind third-place Edinboro who has a 17-15 overall record and an 8-6 PSAC West mark.
Game One: Slippery Rock 9 – Edinboro 10 (8 Innings)
Slippery Rock had a six-run lead in the sixth inning, but it was unable to hold on as Edinboro tacked on four runs in the bottom of the sixth, two in the bottom of the seventh and the winning run in the eighth.
In the first, SRU's
Maggie Moore reached on a fielding error to that scored Brown.
Leah Vith followed with an RBI single, and so did Becca Roesh increasing The Rock lead to three. Later,
Alexa Guglielmino reached on an error allowing Roesch and Vith to come around to make it a 5-0 advantage.
Edinboro got on the board with a two-run home run in the bottom of the third and tallied another scored on an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth.
SRU then answered with four runs in the top of the sixth. Guglielmino tripled to right to score
Regan Hozak, and was followed by
Caitlyn MacKelvey who roped an RBI single.
Adeline Nicholson later stroked a two-RBI single to make it 9-3 Rock.
The Fighting scots responded with a four-run sixth of their own. Abby Sallot ripped a two-RBI double and Lauren Gierlak singled to left to make it 9-6. They added their seventh run on an error cutting the deficit to two.
In the seventh, Edinboro started things off with a solo home run and with two outs and a runner on third, Lauren Gierlak singled to right to tie the game, 9-9.
Boro then sealed the deal in extras in the bottom of the eighth with a Roni Lipinski solo home run, beating The Rock, 10-9.
Andria Copelli (L, 0-6) took the loss going 2.0 innings allowing three runs on four hits.
Carley Nasca (W, 12-6) picked up the win for Edinboro going 2.1 innings surrendering two unearned runs on three hits and a walk while striking out three.
Game Two: Slippery Rock 0 – Edinboro 5
The Rock were held to just three hits in game two as Edinboro scored all five of its runs in the bottom of the sixth and held on for the win.
The game turned out to be a pitcher's duel with neither team getting going until late.
The Rock's best chance to score came in the top of the third when Guglielmino ripped a one-out single. MacKelvey traded places with her on a fielder's choice and then was caught stealing later to end the threat.
Edinboro broke the scoreless tie in the sixth with a big five-run inning. Olivia Jankowski clubbed a home run on a 3-2 count to put the Fighting Scots on the board. Later, Boro's Britany Allen singled up the middle to score a run. Jessica Little ripped a two-run double to make it 4-0 later in the frame and she later would score on an error.
Brown would single in the top of the seventh, but Nasca would retire the side afterwords as Boro won, 5-0.
Nasca (W, 13-6) got the win hurling the complete-game shutout allowing just three hits and sriking out two.
Chloe Sharman (L, 5-8) took the loss surrendering five runs (four earned) on 10 hits while punching out one.
