Rock falls at Goldey-Beacom, 5-2

The Slippery Rock women’s tennis team lost to Goldey-Beacom Sunday on the road, 5-2.

WILMINGTON, Del. – The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team lost to Goldey-Beacom College, 5-2, Sunday at the Delcastle Tennis Center in Wilmington, Delaware.

The match was much closer than the final score would indicate as four of the five singles matches that SRU lost were narrow defeats that could have went either way. The loss drops The Rock's record to 11-7 on the year overall while Goldey-Beacom improves to 14-4 with the victory.

The highlight of the day for Slippery Rock came at No. 1 doubles where Viola Lugmayr and Lois Page beat L. Lesscher y Post and Catarina Zheng, 7-6. Lesscher y Post and Zheng entered the match ranked seventh in the nation in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association's poll.

The win marked the second time in seven days that Lugmayr and Page have defeated a nationally ranked team. The Rock's top duo is now an impressive 16-7 on the season overall and 13-5 in dual matches.

SRU was also successful at No. 2 doubles on Sunday as Lacey Cohen and Olivia Warner defeated Maria Bruno and Silvia Hortelano Pey 6-3.

While The Rock clinched the overall doubles point, Goldey-Beacom was able to earn a win at third doubles when Alma Garcia Valle and Kristin Radeke bested Lauren Fadden and Allie Welch, 6-4.

Goldey-Beacom evened the overall score at 1-1 at the start of singles play when Zheng defeated Lugmayr in the second flight (6-2, retired) before Cohen proceeded to answer back for The Rock via a 6-0, 7-5 win over Lesscher y Post in the first flight.

However, Goldey-Beacom proceeded to close out the match with four straight close victories to claim the team win. First, Anna Hortelano Pey edged Fadden in the fifth flight 6-2, 6-4 followed by a 6-3, 7-5 win by Radeke over Welch in the sixth flight to give GBC a 3-2 lead it would never relinquish.

Slippery Rock just missed out on wins in third and fourth flights to end the competition, but Elin Anderson was able to better Page 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 and Valle got by Warner 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

SRU will return to action 4 p.m. Tuesday when it hosts Clarion University for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division match at the SRU Tennis Courts.
