SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team maintained its perfect Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division record with a 7-0 victory against Clarion University Tuesday at the SRU Tennis Courts.
The victory improves The Rock's record to 12-7 overall and 3-0 in the PSAC West in 2019. Clarion drops to 1-9 and 0-5 in league matches with the loss. The shutout victory was SRU's sixth such of the season.
Slippery Rock rolled through the doubles portion of Tuesday's match and recorded shutouts in four of the six singles bouts en route to the win.
Amy Varckette and
Allie Welch teamed up for the third time this season to begin the afternoon with a 6-0 victory over Sarah Kirmeyer and Hailey Germanoski at No. 3 doubles.
Their win was followed by a 6-1 triumph in the first flight by
Lois Page and
Lacey Cohen against Vinisha Reddy and Alivia Arnold to give SRU its first point of the match.
The Rock closed doubles action with a 6-1 victory in the second flight by
Lauren Fadden and
Olivia Warner against Michelle Petrilla and Katie Benson.
The back half of Slippery Rock's singles lineup then claimed the first two singles points of the day as Varckette blanked Kirmeyer 6-0, 6-0 in the sixth flight while Welch was a 6-0, 6-1 winner against Germanoski in the fifth slot.
Page went on to clinch the team victory for The Rock via a 6-0, 6-0 win in the second flight against Reddy.
Warner and Fadden both claimed 6-0, 6-0 wins as well out of the third and fourth flights, respectively, against Petrilla and Benson. Cohen, the reining PSAC West Athlete of the Week closed the match with a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the first flight.
Slippery Rock returns to competition 5 p.m. Friday at Seton Hill University.
