Rock splits PSAC West games with Cal U

The Slippery Rock softball team split a PSAC West doubleheader with Cal U Saturday at the SRU Softball Complex. SRU won game one, 3-0, but fell in game two, 9-1.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University softball team split a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division doubleheader with California University of Pennsylvania Saturday at the SRU Softball Complex. SRU won game one, 3-0, but fell in game two, 9-1.
 
Slippery Rock needed three runs behind a one-hit complete-game shutout performance by Camie Shumaker in the first contest.
 
In game two, the Vulcans totaled 14 hits and clubbed three home runs en route to the 9-1 victory.
 
With the spit, Slippery Rock is now 14-21 overall and 6-6 in PSAC West games.
 
Game One: Slippery Rock 3 – Cal U 0
The Rock backed Shumaker with a pair of runs in the third inning and one in the fifth, while she was outstanding in the circle coming away with the game one win.

Leah Vith came up clutch in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI single that scored Caitlyn MacKelvey and Alexa Guglielmino.
 
The best chance for California to come back was in the top of the fourth. The Vulcans loaded the bases, but Shumaker worked out of trouble to get the final out.
 
In the bottom of the fifth, Guglielmino led off the frame with a walk. After advancing to second, and with two outs, Adeline Nicholson put the ball in play, but the right fielder misplayed it allowing Guglielmino to score.
 
Shumaker continued her dominance in the following innings allowing just one runner to reach base in the sixth, and The Rock held on for the win, 3-0.

Shumaker (W, 10-9) got the win hurling the complete-game shutout allowing one hit and three walks, while striking out three.
 
Emilee Downing (L, 4-4) got the loss going six innings surrendering three runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks, while punching out three.
 
Game Two: Slippery Rock 1 – Cal U 9
SRU scored just one run in the first inning, but Cal U exploded for nine on 14 hits getting the game two victory.
 
In the first, with Megan Brown on second, Maggie Moore stroked an RBI single up the middle giving Slippery Rock the early lead.
 
The Vulcans knotted the game up in the top of the fifth with an RBI double from Downing.
 
Cal U took the lead in the top of the fifth after a solo home run to left field from Brooke Wilson, and a two-run home run by Downing.
 
After adding a run in the sixth, California put the game away in the seventh after an RBI single from Downing and a three-run home run by Janelle Allison. They retired The Rock in order in the bottom of the seventh and held on for the win, 9-1.
 
Taylor Robblee (W, 6-6) got the win hurling the complete game allowing one run and three hits while punching out nine.
 
Chloe Sharman (L, 4-7) took the loss surrendering four runs on three hits and two walks, while striking out two over 1.2 innings.
 
Up Next
Slippery Rock will take a break from PSAC West games and travel to Indiana (Pa.) for a doubleheader Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
