Rock loses two on day one of Spring Break games

The Slippery Rock softball team dropped its first two contests Saturday afternoon at the NTC Softball Tournament in Clermont, Florida. SRU fell, 2-0, to Notre Dame in game one and then lost to Drury in game two, 7-3.

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Slippery Rock University softball team dropped its first two contests Saturday afternoon at the National Training Center Softball Tournament in Clermont, Florida. SRU fell, 2-0, to Notre Dame College in game one and then lost to Drury University in game two, 7-3.
 
SRU was held scoreless in game one but received a multi-hit game from Caitlyn MacKelvey. Camie Shumaker was solid in the circle going six strong innings.
 
In game two, The Rock's offense was stagnant for most of the game, but freshman Maggie Moore put some runs on the board with her first collegiate home run.
 
The losses put SRU's record at 1-6 to begin the 2019 campaign.  
 
Game One: Slippery Rock 0, Notre Dame 2
Shumaker hurled six strong innings of work, but The Rock struggled to get the bats going behind her tallying just four hits. MacKelvey registered two of SRU's four singles.
 
Scoring did not start until the bottom of the fourth inning when Notre Dame put one on the board. Alexis Maciejowski doubled to left to put a runner on. Laina Combs then singled and Stephens knocked in Maciejowski on an RBI single putting the Falcons up, 1-0.
 
In the bottom of the fifth, NDC took a 2-0 lead on a home run to centerfield from Mikaela Fording.
 
Slippery Rock aimed to tie the game in the top of the sixth. MacKelvey and Alexa Guglielmino registered back-to-back singles, but SRU was retired in order after, keeping the shutout intact.
 
The Rock went down in order in the top of the seventh falling to the Falcons, 2-0.
 
Shumaker (1-3) took the loss going six strong innings surrendering two runs on five hits, while punching out two.
 
Notre Dame's Taylor Olson (1-2) pitched the complete-game shutout scattering four hits and striking out 11.
 
Game Two: Slippery Rock 3, Drury 7
The Panthers put runs on the board in the third, fifth and sixth inning and kept SRU in check until the sixth. SRU scattered six hits including two from Guglielmino and a homer from Maggie Moore.
 
In the third inning, Drury put a runner on for Kinzy Mathis who hit her first of two home runs on the day over the left field fence, giving Drury a 2-0 lead.
 
Scoring would continue in the fifth for DU when Mathis roped an RBI single scoring Megan Terseeg. Madison Hecker later hit a sacrifice fly scoring Courtney Kinion.
 
Following a scoreless bottom of the fifth for The Rock, the Panthers put two runners on for Mathis again who clubbed one over the wall in left-center, giving Drury a 7-0 lead.
 
SRU's scoring did not happen until the bottom of the fifth inning. After a double from Becca Roesch and a walk from Leah Vith, Moore came to the plate and slammed a three-run homer to left field putting Slippery Rock on the board. It was Moore's first collegiate home run and SRU's first homer this season.
 
Slippery Rock could not put together any hits in the bottom of the seventh and Drury held on for the win, 7-3.
 
Andria Copelli (0-3) took the loss going 4.0 innings surrendering four runs on six hits and three walks.
 
Chloe Sharman also saw some action for The Rock going 3.0 innings allowing three runs on five hits and a walk, while punching out three.
 
Drury's Madison Resch (2-2) earned the win going 6.0 innings surrendering three runs on six hits while striking out six.
 
UP NEXT
Slippery Rock will be back in action with two games tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 9:45 a.m. against Fairmont State University.
