Rock drops doubleheader at Seton Hill

The Slippery Rock baseball team was swept in a PSAC West doubleheader at Seton Hill on Saturday, losing game one 4-3 in 11 innings and game two 5-3.

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University baseball team was swept in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division doubleheader at Seton Hill University on Saturday.

SRU (6-11, 0-6 PSAC West) dropped a pair of close contests. Seton Hill (12-11, 4-2 PSAC West) snuck away with a 4-3 win in 11 innings in game one followed by a 5-3 victory in game two.

Frankie Jezioro, Joe Campagna and Abraham Mow recorded hits in each game to lead The Rock Saturday.

Jezioro went 4-for-9 over the doubleheader from his spot atop The Rock's batting order. Campagna made the most of his two hits on the afternoon as the senior produced a double, a home run, three RBI and one run scored. Mow also hit a home run to go with two runs scored and two RBI.

Jezioro is currently on a seven-game hitting streak. Mow and Campagna have both hit two home runs this season with Campagna, who has reached base safely in all 17 games, having also drove in a team-high 17 runs.

GAME ONE: SETON HILL 4 – SLIPPERY ROCK 3 (11 INNINGS)
Slippery Rock lost a tightly contested game in the opener, 4-3, in 11 innings for what was The Rock's second longest contest of the season.

SRU trailed 2-0 heading into the bottom of the third inning when The Rock's bats exploded for three runs via an RBI-double by Campagna that plated Ray Scala from second base followed by a two-run home run from Mow to put SRU up 3-2 on the Griffins.

Seton Hill was able to even the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning, but the run would be the last for either team for the following 6 innings as both The Rock and SHU pitching staffs took over.

Starting pitchers Tanner Stanz and Jared Kollar both pitched into the seventh inning before giving way to each team's respective closers as Kenny Wells (1-1) stranded a Rock runner on second in the top of the frame and Wyatt Daugherty got out of a bases-loaded conundrum in the bottom half of the inning to keep the score knotted at 3-3.

Daugherty and Wells went on to trade scoreless innings heading into the bottom of the 11th when Seton Hill's Chris Law came through with a leadoff single and proceeded to advance to second base on a sacrifice bunt to put the would-be game-winning run in scoring position.

Following an intentional walk of Tommy Pellis, one of the hottest hitters in the PSAC, Brandon Kline roped a single to right field that allowed Law to score from second, giving Seton Hill the 4-3 win.

Stanz went 6.2 innings for The Rock, scattering three runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out two batters on 87 pitchers. Daugherty (2-2) came on to pitch the final 3.2 innings. He allowed just one run on five hits and two walks in the tough-luck loss.

Slippery Rock produced 10 hits in the opener. Luke Trueman went 3-for-4 with a double and a walk. Jezioro and Kyle Bowser registered two-hit games as well.

Campagna, Mow and Mike Collins accounted for The Rock's other three hits with Mow driving in two runs on his second home run of the season and Campagna securing one RBI on his career-high matching 11th double of the season.

Jon Kozarian also reached base once by way of a walk. Scala scored one run and stole a base to round out The Rock's top contributors in game one.

GAME TWO: SETON HILL 5 – SLIPPERY ROCK 3
Game two was another back-and-forth affair that saw SHU strike an early lead before Slippery Rock mounted a comeback only for Seton Hill to respond in dramatic fashion to earn a 5-3 victory.

Seton Hill jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after plating one run in the first and two more in the second. The Griffins carried the shutout into the fourth inning before The Rock was finally able to get to pitcher George Coyle (3-1).

Mow started the inning with a one-out single and advanced to third base on a base hit by Tyler Merigliano before scoring later in the inning thanks to a two-out RBI-single by Colin Cain. Slippery Rock continued its rally in the fifth inning when Campagna launched a two-run home run to left field to bring the contest to a 3-3 tie.

After two shaky innings, Rock starting pitcher Ryan Tapp (0-2) settled down to toss three straight scoreless innings to keep SRU in the game.

However, the Griffins ended Tapp's streak of scoreless frames when Andrew Chuba belted a pinch-hit home run with a runner on base to push Seton Hill's lead out to 5-3. Alex Worthington came on for Tapp following the home run to record the inning's final out.

Jezioro led off the seventh with an infield single, but Seton Hill pitcher Christian Seehorst proceeded to force Scala into a double play and Campagna to pop out to second base to end The Rock's comeback bid and secure a 5-3 victory.

Cain finished game two 3-for-3 with one RBI. Jezioro went 2-for-4 while the trio of Campagna, Mow and Merigliano collected one hit apiece with Campagna's being a two-run home run.

Tapp went 5.2 innings, allowing five runs on 10 hits and a season-low two walks in addition to pitching seven strikeouts. Coyle gave up three runs on over six innings before giving way to Seehorst, who earned the save.

Weather permitting; Slippery Rock and Seton Hill will close out their four-game series with a doubleheader Sunday at Jack Critchfield Park. First pitch of game one is currently set for 1 p.m.
