Rock loses to Nebraska-Kearney, 7-0

The Slippery Rock women’s tennis team closed out its time in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina with a 7-0 loss to Nebraska-Kearney Friday.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team closed out its time in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina with a 7-0 loss to the University of Nebraska at Kearney Friday at the Evian Tennis Center.
 
Slippery Rock exits its spring break trip with an overall record of 7-4. UNK improves to 10-8 with its win over The Rock.
 
The Lopers set the tone for the day by picking up back-to-back 6-1 victories out of the second and third flights to claim the match's doubles point followed by a sweep of singles competition.
 
The Rock's top doubles team of Lois Page and Viola Lugmayr shined for The Rock on Friday as the duo produced SRU's lone win with a 6-4 victory over Zhanel Turarbek and Vasilisa Polunova. Page and Lugmayr leave the spring break trip with a solid 11-5 overall record, including an 8-3 mark in dual matches.
 
SRU played Nebraska-Kearney close in the majority of the singles matches, but couldn't quite push past the Lopers in any flight, as UNK was able to finish off the shutout win with six straight wins.
 
Lugmayr was narrowly edged in in the second flight by Turarbek 6-4, 2-6, 10-5. SRU also just missed out on a point at third singles as Sherry Sun bested Page 6-2, 3-6, 10-4.
 
In the fifth flight, Lauren Fadden fell to Pranathi Gannavaram 6-4, 6-4. Vasilisa Polunova was a 6-4, 6-3 winner in the top flight over Lacey Cohen as well. 
 
Rounding out the day's matches were Fidan Ibrahimova besting Olivia Warner in the fourth flight 6-2, 6-1 and Claire earning a 6-1, 6-1 win in the sixth slot against Allie Welch.
 
SRU will look to bounce back from the loss when it hosts West Liberty University 3:30 p.m. March 22 at the SRU Tennis Courts.
