Rock downs IU East, 6-1

The Slippery Rock women’s tennis team defeated Indiana University East, 6-1, Sunday at Hilton Head High School in Hilton Head, South Carolina.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team defeated Indiana University East, 6-1, Sunday at Hilton Head High School in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
 
The victory, SRU's second in as many matches, improved The Rock's record to 5-2 on the year while Indiana East fell to 7-4. Sunday's contest marked the first of a five-match, six-day road trip for The Rock in Hilton Head Island.
 
SRU opened the match by quickly earning the doubles decision with wins in all three flights against the Red Wolves.
 
Lois Page and Viola Lugmayr registered a 6-3 win against Thais Mendez and Morgan Jackson in the first flight followed by a 6-1 triumph at No. 2 doubles by Lacey Cohen and Olivia Warner over Brooklyn Hubbard and Ashlyn Hubbard.
 
The closest doubles match of the day came out of the third flight as Allie Welch and Lauren Fadden outlasted Brianna Ayres and Shelby Good, 7-5.
 
Slippery Rock closed out the day with five singles wins by relatively wide margins. The lone blemish for The Rock was a tightly contested bout at No. 1 singles where Cohen lost to Mendez 4-6, 6-0, 6-3. Lugmayr downed Jackson 6-2, 6-2 in the second flight and Page defeated Brooklyn Hubbard 6-3, 6-4 to round out the front half of the singles matches.
 
The bottom half of the singles flights featured Warner beating Schmidt 6-0, 6-1, Fadden bettering Ayres 6-3, 6-1 and Amy Varckette tallying a 6-0, 6-1 win against Good.
 
Slippery Rock will look to push its winning streak to three straight with a victory against Georgetown College 2 p.m. Monday at the Evian Tennis Center in Hilton Head Island, S.C.
