Rock cruises to 7-0 win vs. Notre Dame

The Slippery Rock women’s tennis team recorded a 7-0 victory against Notre Dame Sunday afternoon.

WEXFORD, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team recorded a 7-0 victory against Notre Dame College Sunday afternoon at the Oxford Athletic Club in Wexford, Pennsylvania.

The win, an Atlantic Region victory, improves The Rock's record to 4-2 on the season overall. Notre Dame, which competes out of the Mountain East Conference, drops to 1-1 in 2018-19 with the loss. The Falcons entered Saturday's match with just four players, thus giving The Rock default victories at third doubles as well as fifth and sixth singles.

Slippery Rock opened the day in fine fashion as Lacey Cohen and Olivia Warner posted a 6-0 shutout against Laura Herrera and Camryn Kidd in the second doubles flight, guaranteeing SRU the team doubles point, followed by a close 7-5 victory by Viola Lugmayr and Lois Page over Emily Hofsess and Ameer Robertson in the first flight.

Warner and Lugmayr began the singles portion of Saturday's contest with matching 6-0, 6-0 triumphs out of the fourth and second flights, respectively, with Warner besting Kidd and Lugmayr defeating Robertson.

In the top singles flight, Cohen downed Hofsess with a convincing 6-0, 6-1 win. Page came away with a 6-3, 6-3 victory in the third flight against Herrera to close out the match.

Slippery Rock will be idle for the next three weeks before resuming its season with five matches in Hilton Head, South Carolina March 10-15.

Through six dual matches and three individual tournaments so far in 2018-19, Warner (9-3) and Cohen (9-6) are tied for the team lead in singles wins with Lugmayr (8-4) and Page (7-6) close behind in total victories. Page and Lugmayr have teamed up to pace The Rock's doubles pairings with a 7-4 record.
