Rock stumbles against New Haven, 14-1

The Slippery Rock softball team was defeated by New Haven, 14-1, Sunday afternoon in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Becca Roesch tallied the team’s only RBI.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Slippery Rock University softball team was defeated by the University of New Haven, 14-1, Sunday afternoon in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Becca Roesch tallied the team's lone RBI.
 
SRU got on the board in the first inning tallying a run, but UNH exploded for 11 runs in the second inning and three in the fourth inning en route to the win.
 
Megan Brown got things started in the first inning with a base hit. She then stole second, and was driven in by Roesch on an RBI double.
 
New Haven got off and running with a two-run homer by Rachel Crafts in the top of the second inning. Later, Samantha Errera smacked a two-run double, and then Hailey Polisano roped a two-RBI triple.
 
The scoring continued from there as the Chargers tallied 11 runs on 10 hits and two errors in the inning pushing their lead to, 11-1.
 
The Rock aimed to chip away at the lead in the bottom half of the second putting a runner on second base, but they could not push a run across.
 
In the fourth, Errera, Polisano and Mya Case registered an RBI apiece increasing the lead by three, making the score, 14-1.
 
SRU's last chance to keep the game going was in the bottom of the fifth. Brown got on second with two outs, but Slippery Rock could not score and fell, 14-1.
 
Brown, Roesch, Leah Vith, Aubrey Allen and Alexa Guglielmino tallied one hit apiece in the loss.
 
Andria Copelli (0-2) took the loss surrendering 11 runs on 10 hits while striking out two and walking one.
 
Chloe Sharman pitched three innings allowing three runs and striking out two batters.
 
Ava Fitzmaurice (3-1) earned the win for UNH going 4.0 innings allowing one run, striking out five and walking one batter.
 
SRU concluded its opening weekend from Myrtle Beach going 1-4.
 
Slippery Rock will continue its 2019 campaign next week when it plays its first of three games in Petersburg, Virginia. SRU will battle Virginia State on Feb. 23. First pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m.
