Rock drops two games in Myrtle Beach

The Slippery Rock softball team encountered a few weather delays throughout the day in Myrtle Beach, and dropped their third and fourth games of the year. SRU fell, 3-0, against No. 4 Saint Anselm, and then lost in extra innings to Merrimack, 4-3.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Slippery Rock University softball team encountered a few weather delays throughout the day in Myrtle Beach, and dropped their third and fourth games of the year. SRU fell, 3-0, against No. 4 Saint Anselm College, and then lost in extra innings to Merrimack College, 4-3.
 
In game one, SRU struggled to get its offense going tallying just three hits. Andria Copelli battled in the circle keeping The Rock within striking distance, but unfortunately, Slippery Rock could not mount a comeback.
 
To conclude the day, Slippery Rock led the first few innings of the second game, but Merrimack eventually tied the contest, and later registered one run in the eighth to win.  
 
SRU's two losses puts its record at 1-3 to begin the 2019 campaign.
 
GAME ONE: Slippery Rock 0 – Saint Anselm 3
Both teams were scoreless until the fourth inning. Saint Anselm broke through despite Copelli's persistence.
 
Shannon Colson tallied an RBI single to push across SAC's first run, and then Jordan O'Connor reached on a throwing error that would allow Colson to score. Later, Brianna Burley grounded out scoring the team's third run.
 
SRU put runners on in the top of the fifth, sixth and seventh, but were unable to score.
 
Alexa Guglielmino, Maggie Moore and Julia Cepis tallied one hit apiece in the loss.
 
Copelli (0-1) was strong in the circle. She went 5.0 innings surrendering three runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out one.
 
Chloe Sharman also worked a scoreless inning of relief for Slippery Rock.
 
Saint Anselm's Morgan Perry (2-0) picked up the win. She hurled a complete-game shutout scattering three hits and punching out nine batters.  
 
GAME TWO: Slippery Rock 3 – Merrimack 4 (8 innings)
The Rock recorded three runs on just four hits in the first two innings.
 
In the first, Megan Brown grounded out, but tallied an RBI scoring Guglielmino. Aubrey Allen roped an RBI triple in the second inning, and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Caitlyn MacKelvey.
Merrimack's Hannah Johnson put the Warriors on the board with an RBI single in the third, and in the fourth, Luciellia Colarusso roped a 2 RBI single to tie the game up.
 
With the runner beginning extra innings at second, Merrimack's Emily Kurkul gave the Warriors a 4-3 lead with two-out RBI single in the eighth.
 
SRU went 1-2-3 to close out the game, lining into a double-play and then grounding out falling, 4-3.
 
Camie Shumaker (1-2) hurled all eight innings surrendering four runs (three earned) on seven hits while punching out four and walking one.
 
MC's Jenna Wike (2-0) claimed the win walking just two hitters in 4.2 innings.
 
Slippery Rock will conclude its weekend in Myrtle Beach with a 10 a.m. contest against New Haven. Live stats will be available for the game.
