WEXFORD, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team began the spring portion of its 2018-19 season with a 7-0 loss to Carnegie Mellon University Friday night at the Oxford Athletic Club in Wexford, Pennsylvania.
Slippery Rock drops to 3-1 on the season overall after the loss while CMU improved to 3-1 as well in 2018-19 with the victory.
The match started with an 8-4 win by Melissa Strome and Danna Taylor over
Viola Lugmayr and
Lois Page, 8-4, in the top doubles flight. CMU then clinched the doubles point via a narrow 8-6 win in the third flight by Vinaya Rao and Jamie Vizelman against
Lauren Fadden and
Allie Welch.
Janabelle Wu and Courtney Ollis also picked up an 8-5 win in the No. 2 doubles flight by way of an 8-5 triumph against
Lacey Cohen and
Olivia Warner.
Slippery Rock was unable to halt Carnegie Mellon's momentum in the singles portion of Friday's match as the Terriers were able to capture all six bouts to seal the shutout.
Taylor downed Cohen in the first flight 6-2, 6-1. CMU also claimed straight set victories in the fourth, fifth and sixth flights when Wu beat Warner (6-1, 6-1), Beata Liberchuk bested Fadden (6-1, 6-0) and Victoria Chang bettered Welch (6-3, 6-0).
The two closest singles contests of the night came in the second and third flights. Vizelman narrowly escaped with a 6-4, 6-7, 10-4 victory in the second slot against Lugmayr while Rao edged Page 7-4, 4-6, 15-13 in the third flight.
Slippery Rock returns to competition Feb. 9 at St.
Bonaventure University.
