SALEM, W. Va. - The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team recorded the third-highest offensive output in program history Wednesday night in a 108-105 non-conference victory at Salem University.
Â
Slippery Rock improves to 2-2 on the season with the win while Salem falls to 1-3 in 2019-20 in the loss.
Â
Prior to Wednesday's game, Slippery Rock had scored 100 or more points in a game just 10 times in program history with its last triple-digit performance coming in the form of a 101-72 victory over Lock Haven on Feb. 18, 2009. Coincidentally, the school record for points in a game is 111 against Salem on Dec. 4, 2008.
Â
In stark contrast from Slippery Rock's 50-point showing against Bowie State University on Nov. 15, Slippery Rock exploded for its 108 points behind a great shooting night from the floor that saw SRU go 30-for-64 (.469) while also being spurred on to its point total with a historic night at the free throw line.
Â
SRU easily broke program single-game records in free throws made and free throws attempted after a 44-for-52 (84.6 percent) showing at the foul line.
Â
Six Rock players finished in double figures against the Tigers with
Madison Johnson leading the way via a 28-point, 10-rebound double-double effort that also included three assists and one block. Johnson's 28-point showing was a career-high. The double-double was the third of Johnson's collegiate career.
Â
After a quiet three quarters,
Brooke Hinderliter was great for The Rock when they needed her the most as she scored 11 of her 19 points over the final 10 minutes. Hinderliter also accounted for four rebounds and one steal.
Â
LeeAnn Gibson collected a career-high 14 points in addition to seven rebounds. The duo of
Daeja Quick and
Olivia Fusaro each scored 13 points as well with
Karington Ketterer rounding out The Rock's top scorers with 10 points. Quick also dished out a career-high nine assists while committing just two turnovers.
Â
Anyah Curd came off the bench to provide Slippery Rock with six points, nine rebounds and one block over 18 minutes.
Â
Kickstarted by 11 early points from Johnson, SRU appeared poised to put the game out of reach early as The Rock built a 13-point lead at the end of the first quarter, but Salem answered back with a dominant second quarter to take a 53-52 lead into the halftime break.
The second half was a back-and-forth matchup in which both teams traded baskets for the majority of the final two quarters.
Â
After trailing by as many as four points in the early stages of the third quarter, SRU put together a mini-run that was capped off at the 6:54 mark by a jumper from Gibson to give Slippery Rock a 60-58 lead it would hold onto for the next 15:52 until a 3-pointer by Nia Bishop gave the Tigers a one-point advantage at 103-102 with 60 seconds left in the fourth quarter.
Â
Unfazed by Salem's late comeback bid, Slippery Rock calmly worked the ball inside on the next possession following Bishop's 3-pointer which led to Ketterer getting fouled. The senior hit both free throw attempts to put SRU back ahead of Salem, 104-103, with 34 seconds remaining in regulation.
Â
Slippery Rock forced a stop on the ensuing possession, forcing Salem to foul in an effort to get possession back. Like Ketterer, Quick was able to convert both of the accompanying free throws to stretch SRU's advantage to three points.
Â
Johnson proceeded to close out the game for Slippery Rock by blocking a Salem 3-point attempt that would have tied the game before making a fast break layup thus rendering a last-second layup by Bishop ultimately meaningless en route to a 108-105 Rock victory.
Â
Slippery Rock overcame 19 turnovers and 18 Salem 3-pointers thanks to its stellar night at the free throw line all the while out-rebounding the Tigers 49-47 and holding SU to a 39.8 (35-for-88) field goal percentage.
Â
SRU also held advantages over the Tigers in points off turnovers (22-19), points in the paint (34-22) and fast break points (10-0). Â
Â
With its season-opening four-game road trip now complete, Slippery Rock will now turn its attention to its first home contests of the season as SRU will host a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover games at Morrow Field House 1 p.m. Saturday against Shippensburg University and 1 p.m. Sunday against Lock Haven University.
