Rock ends season with loss to Mercyhurst

The Slippery Rock volleyball team wrapped up its 2019 season with a 25-19, 25-18, 25-18 loss to Mercyhurst Saturday at Morrow Field House.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University volleyball team wrapped up its 2019 season with a 3-0 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Northwest Division loss to Mercyhurst University Saturday at Morrow Field House.
 
The Lakers scored eight of the final 12 points in the opening set to earn a 25-19 victory before jumping out to a 16-11 lead in the second set en route to a 25-18 win followed by a third set in which Mercyhurst used a 5-0 run midway through the game to help secure an eventual 25-18 match-deciding victory.
 
Abigail Koeller led Slippery Rock in its season finale with nine kills and 11 digs. Kaley Fucci, one of three seniors to play in their final collegiate match Saturday along with Zoe Rivet and Shannon Ream, went for eight kills, 14 digs, two blocks and one ace.
 
Erinn Kahoe struck six kills along with a match-high four blocks while fellow middle hitter Abigail Nigon registered four kills and a pair of blocks. Nigon closes out her rookie season with 86 career blocks, the third highest single-season total by a freshman in program history.
 
Ream and Lauren Crytzer rounded out The Rock's attack with two kills and one kill, respectively. Ream also tallied two blocks.
 
Rivet guided The Rock with 28 assists, one ace, one block and seven digs. Libero Gabby Huck made a team-high 20 digs defensively.
 
For the match, Slippery Rock held advantages over the Lakers in both aces (4-3) and blocks (6-4) while Mercyhurst finished with edges in kills (39-30) and attack percentage (.225-.070).
 
Prior to Saturday's match, Slippery Rock honored its 2019 senior class of Fucci, Rivet and Ream for their contributions to the program over their careers. Rivet leaves The Rock ranked fifth in program history in assists and seventh in aces. Fucci exits SRU ranked 16th all-time in kills.
