Rock loses defensive battle at Bowie State, 58-50

The Slippery Rock women’s basketball team dropped a 58-50 decision on the road Friday night at Bowie State.

BOWIE, Md. - The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team dropped a 58-50 decision on the road Friday night at Bowie State University.
 
The non-conference loss drops The Rock's record to 1-2 on the year while Bowie State improves to 1-0 in 2019-20 following the home victory.
 
Points were at a premium between Slippery Rock and the Bulldogs all night as the two Atlantic Region foes played to a 32-32 tie entering the fourth quarter before Bowie State was able to seal the victory with a 16-3 run over a five-minute stretch in the final period on the way to its eventual eight-point victory. Eight of BSU's 16 points over the run came at the foul line.
 
Madison Johnson led the way for Slippery Rock with a 16-point, five-rebound, one-steal performance. In addition to going a perfect 3-for-3 at the foul line, Johnson was also a solid 6-for-14 at the foul line and 1-for-2 at the 3-point line.
 
Brooke Hinderliter scored 10 points thanks in part to a stellar 6-for-6 night at the foul line in addition to grabbing four rebounds, making two steals and passing out two assists. Daeja Quick was SRU's third leading scorer with nine points. Quick also pulled in four rebounds.
 
Playing in her first game of the season, LeeAnn Gibson grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds while also chipping in four points. Gibson's 13 rebounds represented the fourth-highest total by a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference athlete this year.
 
Anyah Curd came off the bench to provide The Rock with four points, five rebounds and three blocks. Karington Ketterer (four points / four rebounds) and Olivia Fusaro (three points) rounded out The Rock's top performers.
 
As a team, Slippery Rock shot 35.2 percent (19-for-54) from the field, 13.3 percent (2-for-15) from 3-point range all the while making the most of its limited free throw opportunities by going a perfect 10-for-10 from the foul line.
 
SRU held a 40-31 edge in rebounding, but Bowie State forced The Rock into 20 turnovers which translated into 22 points off turnovers for the Bulldogs. BSU made 40 percent (20-for-50) of its field goals despite going just 1-for-8 from 3-point territory. Bowie State made up for its subpart 3-point shooting by hitting 70.8 percent (17-for-24) of its free throws.

Talanya Hutton scored 18 points and Kyaja Williams came away with eight points, eight rebounds and five steals to lead Bowie State.
 
Slippery Rock concludes its season-opening four-game road trip 5:30 p.m. Nov. 20 at Salem University.
