ERIE, Pa. – Kayla Swope netted her fourth goal of the season and
Emma Yoder recorded six saves en route to a 1-0 road victory over Gannon University for the Slippery Rock University women's soccer team.
With the win, Slippery Rock improves to 8-2-0 overall and 7-1-0 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division after falling to Edinboro University last time out. Gannon falls to 4-4-1 on the season with a 3-4-1 mark in conference play.
SRU was led on offense by Swope who scored an unassisted goal in the 22nd minute to give The Rock an early 1-0 advantage.
Jordyn Minda and
Rachel Edge recorded two shots each while
Shannon McIntyre added a shot on goal.
The Slippery Rock offense came out firing, recording two-straight corner kicks and a free kick before Swope dribbled through the Gannon defense and fired a shot from 10 yards out to give SRU a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute.
The Rock defense would stifled the Golden Knight offense allowing only two first half shots. GU settled in defensively following the score, defending the next two SRU shots to close out the half.
Gannon attacked the Slippery Rock defense coming out of halftime, recording nine consecutive shots with five being on target. The stout Rock defense stood up to the test with Yoder leading the charge in goal, recording five second half saves.
Two-straight corner kick attempts were stifled by The Rock defense at the end of regulation, securing the 1-0 victory for Slippery Rock.
Gannon and Slippery Rock tied for the lead in corner kicks (5-5) with Gannon holding the advantage in total shots (15-7) and shots on goal (6-4).
Yoder recorded six saves en route to the sophomore's fourth shutout victory of the season in 90 clean minutes for The Rock.
Slippery Rock returns to action when it hosts Clarion University for a PSAC West matchup at James Egli Field 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
GAME NOTES
• With the win, Slippery Rock improves to 30-9-2 following a loss while outscoring opponents 80-29 in those games.
• The 1-0 victory marks the first game this season Slippery Rock has scored only one goal and won.
• The Rock's 7-1-0 record in conference play is the best eight-game start to a conference schedule for Slippery Rock since 2007.
