Trube’s late goal lifts Rock to 3-2 win vs. Lakers

Jessie Trube scored a goal with just 1:25 remaining in regulation to lead the Slippery Rock field hockey team to a 3-2 win at home against Mercyhurst Tuesday afternoon.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Sophomore forward Jessie Trube scored a goal with just 1:25 remaining in regulation to lead the Slippery Rock University field hockey team to a 3-2 win against Mercyhurst University Tuesday afternoon at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

With the game tied 2-2 and seemingly destined for overtime, Trube corralled a clear attempt from Courtney Page and proceeded to sprint 60 yards down the field to beat one defender then forced Laker goalkeeper Mikayla Berndt to come out from the cage before placing a perfect shot to the far right corner to give The Rock a one-goal advantage with under two minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Following Trube's dramatic goal the Lakers had one final solid scoring opportunity, but the defensive duo of Jordan Barnes and Holly Stiller were able to force Mercyhurst's Clare Ahern into a turnover to preserve the one-goal win.

Slippery Rock jumped out to a 2-0 lead against the Lakers as Page and Madison Posivak tallied goals just 47 seconds apart at 21:47 and 22:34, respectively, in the second quarter. Mercyhurst countered with a goal of its own via a Katie Goodenow strike in the 24th minute to cut the Lakers' deficit to one goal heading into halftime.

After a scoreless third quarter, Mercyhurst evened the game at 2-2 when Ahern netted her first goal of the game in the 55th minute before Trube's aforementioned game-winning goal, which was the third of her career.

For the game, Slippery Rock held advantages over the Lakers in total shots (11-4), shots on goal (6-2) and penalty corners (6-2).

Trube now has a team-high seven goals this season. Page's score was her third of the year while Posivak tallied her first collegiate score in the win. Kalie Reed and Addy Ross collected assists as well for The Rock.

Page, Trube and Kayla Ulrich all posted three shots with Posivak and Abby McKay accounting for The Rock's other two shots. Hannah Nurse played all 60 minutes for SRU in the win, stopping one shot in what was her third victory of the season.

The victory improves SRU's record to 4-11 overall in 2019 and 1-6 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. Mercyhurst drops to 3-11 overall and 1-6 in league contests with the loss.

Slippery Rock returns to competition 12 p.m. Saturday at Bloomsburg University.
