EDINBORO, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team fell on the road in overtime to Edinboro University, 2-1, on Wednesday evening.
The loss snaps Slippery Rock's seven-game win streak and moves its record to 7-2-0 overall and 6-1-0 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division. Edinboro improves to 5-2-1 overall and 5-0-1 in conference play with the win.
The Rock was led on offense by
Rachel Edge, who scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season in the 76th minute on a pass from
Shannon McIntyre to tie the contest at 1-1.
Sofia Harrison added a team high three shots on goal as well.
Defense was the story of the first half for both teams as Slippery Rock sucessfully defended six Edinboro shots, which included three saves by
Emma Yoder, while the Fighting Scots thwarted two shots on goal by Harrison to send the game into halftime scoreless.
Edinboro struck first coming out of halftime when Brittnie Spithaler netted an unassisted score to give the Fighting Scots a 1-0 advantage in the 46th minute.
The Slippery Rock defense restablished itself following the score, with Yoder recording four more saves while SRU's offense responded with Edge's seventh score of 2019 at 74:26 to tie the score at 1-1.
SRU sucessfully defended three corner kicks and two shots following Edge's goal to send the contest to overtime.
However, just over three minutes into the first overtime period, Danielle Chatten scored on a pass from Spithaler to secure a 2-1 overtime-victory for Edinboro in the 94th minute.
As a team, Edinboro held the advantage in total shots (19-7), shots on goal (11-5) and corner kicks (7-4).
Yoder finished the game with a season-high nine saves in 93:20 minutes played in goal for The Rock. McIntyre's assist was her fourth of the season which is already a personal single-season high.
Slippery Rock returns to action when it travels to Gannon University for a PSAC Western Division road matchup 6 p.m. Oct. 9.
GAME NOTES
• The seven total shots by SRU mark the least number of shots in a game for Slippery Rock this season.
• The 2-1 loss ends a seven-game winning-streak for The Rock, the streak was tied for the sixth-longest in program history and marked its longest since 2016.
• Slippery Rock has a 2-2-5 record in overtime games over the last four seasons.
