Rock ties at Ashland, 1-1

The Slippery Rock men’s soccer team tied Ashland Saturday afternoon, 1-1, in a non-conference contest. Luke Picchi recorded SRU’s lone goal off an assist by Hayden Seifert. Matt Hunsberger made seven saves in goal for The Rock.

ASHLAND, Ohio – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team tied Ashland University Saturday afternoon, 1-1, in a non-conference contest. Luke Picchi recorded SRU's lone goal off an assist by Hayden Seifert. Matt Hunsberger made seven saves in goal for The Rock.
 
Slippery Rock scored in the 16th minute when Seifert shot a ball at close range and Picchi finished it off a deflection.
 
With just under eight minutes to play in regulation, Ashland's Jack Sarkisian scored off a corner kick by Yusuke Yasumasu to even the score, 1-1.
 
Neither team could put one in the net in the first or second overtime period as the game ended at a 1-1 draw.
 
AU held the advantage in shots, 14-9, and shots on goal, 8-6. SRU led Ashland in corner kicks, 7-3.
 
The Rock is now 1-2-1 on the season while the Eagles are 0-2-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GOAL: ROCK 1, AU 0; 16:39m: Seifert shot one that was deflected allowing Picchi to shoot one into the net.
GOAL: AU 1, ROCK 1; 83:45m: Sarkisian scored off a corner kick entry by Yasumasu.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Saturday's game was SRU's first overtime game since Sept. 24, 2017 against Gannon. That game also resulted in a draw.
  • Picchi's goal adds another scorer to Slippery Rock's list this season. He joins Seifert, George Oakley and Justin Minda as The Rock's four goal scorers in 2018.
  • Seifert's assist gives him the team lead for total points. He has three on one goal and one assist.
  • Hunsberger made a season-high seven saves in the tie against Ashland.
