Rock defeats Daemen, 6-1

The Slippery Rock women’s tennis team defeated Damen, 6-1, Sunday afternoon in what was The Rock’s first dual match of the season.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team defeated Daemen College, 6-1, Sunday afternoon in a non-conference match at the SRU Tennis Courts.

In the offseason, NCAA Division II adopted a new scoring policy. Much like their Division I counterparts, Division II teams will now grant one point to the school that wins two of the three doubles matches as opposed to the old method when each doubles match resulted in one point for the winning school.

With the win, Slippery Rock improves to 1-0 in 2018-19 while Daemen drops to 0-4 in the loss. Slippery Rock is now 32-7 over the last 11 seasons in fall dual matches.

Damen only had four players Sunday, thus giving The Rock default wins at third doubles, fifth singles and sixth singles.

SRU's No. 2 doubles pairing of Olivia Warner and Lacey Cohen defeated Alliya Foster and Courtney Otis, 6-1, in the first completed match of the day to give SRU the doubles point followed by another Rock win at No. 1 doubles when Viola Lugmayr and Lois Page bested Jessica Robins and Christina Stasiuk, 6-2.

In their first season as teammates, Lugmayr and Page have produced a record of 3-1.
Warner than began the singles portion of Sunday's competition with a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Foster in the fourth flight. Page and Lugmayr followed suit at third and second singles as Page downed Otis 6-1, 6-0 and Lugmayr beat Robins 6-0, 6-1.

Warner is now 6-1 in singles matches this season. Lugmayr's record is nearly as impressive at 4-2 through the early stages of the year.

However, Daemen was able to avoid the shutout when Stadiuk edged Cohen in the top flight 6-3, 6-3.

Slippery Rock will break from dual match competition to take part in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Individual Championships Sept. 29-30 in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania.
