Rock cruises to series sweep of Indiana

The Slippery Rock baseball team finished off a four-game series sweep of Indiana (Pa.) with a pair of wins at home on Sunday.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University baseball team finished off a four-game series sweep of Indiana (Pa.) with a pair of victories Sunday against Indiana University (Pa.) at Jack Critchfield Park.

Chris Anastas tossed a two-hit, complete-game shutout in The Rock's 2-0 victory in game one while Joe Campagna struck a walk-off single to left field that scored Ray Scala from second base to give SRU a 6-5 win in eight innings in game two. Campagna was a combined 3-for-6 with three RBI over the doubleheader.

The doubleheader sweep improves The Rock's record to 23-11 overall and 16-4 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division. SRU exits the weekend tied with Mercyhurst for first place in the PSAC West standings. IUP drops to 10-22 overall and 7-13 in league games with the losses.

GAME ONE: Slippery Rock 2 – Indiana 0
The opener was dominated by Anastas, who allowed just five baserunners over seven innings in the 2-0 shutout.

The junior hurler had a no-hitter going through 5.1 innings before Chris Calliari was able to place a single into left field. Anastas then hit Brock Bonadio to put runners on first and second with one out, but he got out of the jam by recording back-to-back strikeouts.

IUP once again put runners on first and second in the seventh inning, but Anastas was masterful working around the jam as he promptly forced IUP into three outs to end the game.

While Anastas was shutting down the Crimson Hawks' bats, Slippery Rock scored one run in the opening inning on an RBI-single by Campagna followed by an insurance run in the third via a run-scoring groundout by Matt Mandes. The two runs were more than enough for Anastas, who notched his first career complete game.

Anastas finished the contest with a career-high matching nine strikeouts while scattering two hits and one walk over seven innings on 93 pitches. Anastas is now 5-1 in 2018 with a 3.26 ERA. IUP starter Jeff Allen (1-5) gave up both Rock runs on three hits and four walks in the tough-luck loss.

Campagna, Tyler Walters and Luca Fuscardo all went 1-for-2 in the opener with Campagna driving in one run and Walters stealing his ninth base of the year.

GAME TWO: Slippery Rock 6 – Indiana 5 (8 innings)
Slippery Rock and IUP traded the lead back-and-forth throughout game two, but The Rock ultimately pulled off the win by scoring two unanswered runs late for the 6-5 extra-inning victory.

Trailing 5-4 in the sixth inning, SRU tied the contest when, with the bases loaded, Campagna came through with the first of his two clutch base hits on the day to score Abraham Mow from third base, tying the contest at 5-5. Kyle Wise kept the game tied in the top of the seventh when he made a diving catch in center field with an IUP baserunner sprinting home from second base for the inning's third out.

Following a scoreless bottom of the seventh, relief pitcher Wyatt Daugherty stranded two Crimson Hawk runners in the top of the eighth to maintain the tie.

Scala singled to lead off the eighth and proceeded to move into scoring position via a groundout by Walters. Cleanup hitter Christian Porterfield was then intentionally walked to put runners on first and second for Campagna, who drove an 0-1 pitch over Indiana left fielder Adam Polites' head to plate Scala and give The Rock a walk-off victory.

Campagna was 2-for-4 with two RBI in game two. In addition to scoring the game-winning run, Scala went 3-for-4. Mow was 2-for-5 with two runs scored, one home run and three RBI. The home run was his seventh of the year; the third most by a true freshman in program history.

Walters also turned in a two-hit game while drawing his team-best 24th walk of the season. Fuscardo, Porterfield, Frankie Jezioro and Tyler Merigliano all had one hit apiece as well with Fuscardo also driving in one run.

Daugherty (3-2) came out of The Rock's bullpen to pitch two scoreless innings en route to picking up his third win of the season. Ryan Tapp got the start on the mound for SRU. He allowed three runs on five hits and three walks over three innings. Tanner Stanz served as Slippery Rock's middle reliever Sunday, giving up two runs in three innings of work.

Crimson Hawk reliever Christian McClure (1-2) was the pitcher of record for IUP. He surrendered two runs on six hits and a walk in 2.1 innings.

Slippery Rock will break from its PSAC West schedule to play a non-conference doubleheader April 24 against Alderson Broaddus at Jack Critchfield Park. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
