Rock offense rolls to doubleheader sweep of Edinboro

The Slippery Rock softball team tallied 21 hits in two games and defeated Edinboro, 6-4, in game one and, 6-3, in game two in a PSAC West matchup Saturday. Kailey Myers went 6-for-8 with two home runs and five RBI on the day.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.  – The Slippery Rock University softball team tallied 21 hits in two games and defeated Edinboro University, 6-4, in game one and, 6-3, in game two in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division matchup Saturday. Kailey Myers went 6-for-8 with two home runs and five RBI on the day.
 
The Rock managed a comeback victory in game one after Edinboro took a lead in the top of the sixth inning. However, Myers and Alexa Guglielmino registered a pair of clutch home runs in the bottom half of the inning en route to a win, 6-4.
 
SRU came from behind again in the sixth inning in game two as Myers slugged a three-run dinger putting The Rock ahead, 6-3. Paige Flore (5-1) pitched a solid 3.1 innings out of the bullpen and earned a victory.
 
Slippery Rock improves to 21-14 overall and 8-4 in PSAC West play, while Edinboro falls to 4-17 on the season and 0-8 in league games.
 
The Rock's 21 wins are now the most since they managed a 22-21 record in 2010.
 
GAME ONE: Slippery Rock 6 – Edinboro 4
The sixth inning proved to be a big one as the Fighting Scots took a late lead on a grand slam, but SRU answered back with a pair of home runs in the bottom half of the inning and held on for the win.
 
Slippery Rock scored first on an RBI single from Becca Roesh that scored Emily Nagle. With the bases loaded, Allie Fischer then reached on a catcher's interference scoring Myers making it an early 2-0 lead.
 
With the bases juiced in the bottom of the fifth, SRU went up 3-0 when McKenzie Garland reached on an error by the pitcher scoring Megan Brown.
 
The Fighting Scots made the game interesting in the top of the sixth though in a big way. Shannon Gilbert led off with a single and Brittany Allen later singled with one out to put two runners on. Ronni Lipinski singled to load the bases and Victoria Allocco ripped the first pitch she saw over the centerfield wall for a grand slam to give Edinboro a 4-3 advantage.
 
SRU answered back right away in the bottom half of the inning when Guglielmino roped a 3-2 fastball over the wall to tie the game. It was her second home run of the season. The Rock were not done as after a pitching change, Brown reached on an error and Myers cranked one over the centerfield wall for a two-run homer giving Slippery Rock the lead, 6-4.
Brooke Dawson (7-8) slammed the door in the seventh inning and earning a victory. She pitched a complete-game allowing four runs (three earned) on nine hits one walk and three strikeouts.
 
Kerri Stevens (1-5) takes the loss going 0.2 innings allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit while punching out two.
 
GAME TWO: Slippery Rock 6 – Edinboro 3
In game two, it was the sixth inning again that The Rock posted a comeback scoring four big runs en route to 6-3 win.
 
Edinboro got out ahead in the first following a B. Allen RBI single scoring Gilbert.
 
The Fighting Scots tallied another run in the third inning on an RBI single by Rose Haggerty scoring Olivia Jankowski and giving EU a 2-0 lead.
 
In the bottom half of the inning, Lauren Hawley punched a single up the middle scoring Brown and Nagle tying the game up, 2-2.
 
Edinboro took the lead right back in the fourth when Ashley Pearson hit grounded out allowing Courtney Allen to score.
 
With The Rock down in the sixth, Guglielmino got the comeback started again with a leadoff double. Nagle then reached on an error, putting runners on the corners. She stole second, and the throw got away from the second baseman allowing Guglielmino to score and tie the game. Brown then walked and with two runners, on Myers answered again with a three-run homer to leftfield giving SRU a 6-3 lead. She is now tied for the team-lead in home runs (5) and leads all Rock hitters in RBI (31).
 
Flore pitched a 1-2-3 seventh and earned the victory after going 3.1 innings surrendering one walk while punching out one batter.
 
Camie Shumaker took the no-decision going 3.2 innings allowing three earned runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out four.
 
Carley Nasca (2-7) managed the loss going 5.0 innings giving up six runs (four earned) on 12 hits and three walks while punching out two.
 
Slippery Rock will close out its season series with the Fighting Scots tomorrow at Edinboro. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
