Rock splits doubleheader at Edinboro

The Slippery Rock softball team split a PSAC West doubleheader at Edinboro Sunday afternoon. Paige Flore pitched five strong innings in game two en route to her sixth win of the season.

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University softball team split a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division doubleheader at Edinboro University Sunday afternoon. Paige Flore pitched five strong innings in game two en route to her sixth win of the season.
 
Slippery Rock had a shutout entering the sixth inning in game one, but the Fighting Scots battled back to score nine runs in two innings and record the win, 9-8.
 
In game two, SRU manufactured six runs as Flore (6-1) and Andria Copelli turned in solid performances in the circle for the win, 6-3.
 
The Rock improves to 22-15 overall and 9-5 in PSAC West games, while Edinboro is 5-18 on the season and 1-9 in league contests.
 
GAME ONE: Edinboro 9 – Slippery Rock 8
SRU took an eight-run lead into the sixth, but Edinboro tallied a run in the bottom of the sixth, and eight in the bottom of the seventh, completing a comeback victory.
 
Allie Fischer got things started in the top of the first with a 2 RBI single scoring Emily Nagle and Megan Brown.
 
In the third, Fischer put the ball in play and the centerfielder made an error allowing Cortney Claypoole to score. Later in the inning, Alexa Guglielmino stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and ripped a triple down the right field line to score Caitlyn MacKelvey, McKenzie Garland and Fischer. SRU took a 6-0 lead over EU.
 
Kailey Myers continued her powerful weekend in the fourth inning with a solo home run to left. It was her third consecutive game with a home run and she currently leads the team in the category with six.
 
Becca Roesch added to the lead in the sixth with an RBI single that scored Brown giving The Rock a lead, 8-0.
 
After Edinboro got a run in the bottom of the sixth, the Fighting Scots strung together eight hits in the bottom of the seventh. Brittany Allen singled, Victoria Allocco singled and Courtney Allen singled to drive in B. Allen. Ronni Lipinski then singled to center to drive in Allocco and make it an 8-3 game. Maycee Shumaker followed with a 2 RBI double and after The Rock got an out, Lauren Gierlak doubled in another run cutting the lead to 8-6. With two outs in the inning, Allocco came up again with the bases juiced and roped a single to right that scored three and completing the come-from-behind victory.
Amanda Metz (2-5) came in for relief and earned the win for the Fighting Scots going 4.1 innings allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk while striking out three.
 
Brooke Dawson (7-9) took the loss going 6.2 innings surrendering nine earned runs on 11 hits and two walks while punching out two.
 
GAME TWO: Slippery Rock 6 – Edinboro 3
The Rock scored runs in the first and sixth innings completing a comeback of their own to earn the victory.
 
Fischer put the ball in play in the first and Allocco misplayed it allowing Nagle and Brown to score.
 
In the bottom half of the first, Edinboro responded with runs of its own. Shannon Gilbert ripped an RBI single allowing Danna Heh to score and Olivia Jankowski reached on a fielder's choice, which chased home Gierlak.
 
Jankowski later singled in the third inning scoring Gilbert giving Edinboro a 3-2 lead.
 
Flore responded with a quick inning in the fourth, and worked out of danger in the fifth keeping the lead where it was.
 
SRU would manufacture some runs in the sixth after Roesch reached on an error with one out. Fischer singled putting two runners on and Garland loaded the bases with a single. MacKelvey reached on a fielder's choice allowing Roesch to score. Guglielmino then hit one to second and it was misplayed. Allocco then threw the ball away allowing all three runs to come around. The Rock took the lead, 6-3.
 
Copelli (S, 1) entered in the sixth and slammed the door for the six-out save.
 
Flore earned her sixth win of the season going 5.0 innings surrendering three runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks.
 
Kerri Stevens (1-6) took the loss for the Fighting Scots in game two going 5.1 innings allowing six runs (one earned) on six hits and three walks while punching out seven.
 
SRU finishes its season series with Edinboro going 3-1. 
 
The Rock is back in action Tuesday, April 24 with PSAC West doubleheader against California (Pa.). It will be final regular season matchup between the two teams. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
