CLERMONT, Fla. – The Slippery Rock University softball team lost a game against the University of Charleston (W.Va.) and ended its day with a loss against Northwood University Monday afternoon in Clermont, Florida.
Both
Kailey Myers and
Becca Roesch tallied two-run home runs against Charleston in game one, but the Golden Eagles managed a couple of big innings en route to a 7-4 victory.
In game two, The Rock mustered only four hits and struggled to put runs on the board as the Timberwolves rallied for eight runs earning the win, 8-0.
GAME ONE: Charleston 7 – Slippery Rock 4
Brooke Dawson cruised through the first few innings and The Rock posted runs in the fourth and fifth, but were unable to contain Charleston from a big fifth inning and the Golden Eagles held on for the win.
Dawson went 1-2-3 in the first, faced just four in the second and set the side down in order in the third looking solid in the circle.
In the top of the fourth,
Lauren Hawley led off the inning with a walk. Myers stepped to the plate and blasted a two-run homer over the wall to make it a 2-0 Rock lead. It was Myers' second home run of 2018.
After Charleston added one in the bottom of the fourth,
Emily Nagle led off the fifth with a single.
Megan Brown bunted her over to second.
Becca Roesch then crushed a homer over the centerfield wall to make it a 4-2 SRU lead. It was her team-leading third home run of the season and she's now homered three times in two days.
Charleston started to turn it around in the bottom half of the inning when the Golden Eagles rallied for six runs on five hits and one error to take a 7-4 lead.
Slippery Rock managed to get runners in scoring position in the sixth and seventh, but the Golden Eagles held on for the 7-4 victory.
Dawson (3-4) took the loss surrendering seven runs (six earned) on eight hits, while striking out six over five innings pitched.
Northwood's Carlee Lucas (4-2) earned the win in relief hurling three innings surrendering one run on four hits and striking out one.
Slippery Rock falls to 9-5, while Charleston improves to 10-4.
GAME TWO: Northwood 8 – Slippery Rock 0
Slippery Rock did not tally a hit until the fourth inning and Northwood registered eight runs en route to an 8-0 victory.
The Timberwolves scored early on a couple of RBI doubles in the top of the second inning to make it a 2-0 lead.
Northwood rallied for five more runs in the top of the fourth on four hits including a big three-run home run as NU took a 7-0 lead.
The Rock finally cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth when Hawley roped a single up the middle. Myers then walked to put runners on first and second, but
Allie Fischer grounded out to end the frame.
After Northwood tacked on another run in the top of the seventh, Slippery Rock had one final chance to put some runs on the board in the bottom of the inning.
Alexa Guglielmino reached on an error and
Leah Vith singled to left to put two runners on with two outs. Unfortunately, Northwood's Taylor Wright, got the last out for the complete-game shutout.
Paige Flore (2-1) recorded the loss going 3.1 innings surrendering five runs (four earned) on four hits while striking out two.
Wright (4-1) earned the win via the complete-game shutout striking out 11 and walking four.
Nagle, Hawley, Guglielmino and Vith all tallied one hit apiece in the loss.
With the loss, Slippery Rock falls to 9-6 on the season while the Timberwolves improve to 6-2.
The Rock is back in action Wednesday when they battle Jefferson College and Bloomsburg University. First pitch against Jefferson is scheduled for 9 a.m.
