Rock improves to 3-0 with win at UVa.-Wise

Bre Vodde and Tia Torchia each scored five goals to lead The Rock to a 16-9 win on the road at the University of Virginia at Wise Saturday.

WISE, Va. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team improved to 3-0 on the year with a 16-9 victory at the University of Virginia at Wise Saturday in non-conference action.
 
Virginia-Wise dropped to 4-2 with the loss after entering the game with a 4-1 record with the only loss coming on the road at No. 12 Regis (Colorado).
 
Slippery Rock jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first seven minutes and pushed the advantage out to 9-2 by halftime. The Cavaliers scored the first two goals of the second half, but SRU answered shortly after with a 4-0 run that put the game out of reach.
 
The Rock posted advantages of 32-18 in shots, 48-37 in ground balls and 16-11 in draw controls. SRU was 19-of-26 in clear attempts, while Virginia-Wise was 23-of-27.
 
Bre Vodde and Tia Torchia paced the attack with five goals each. Vodde added two assists to finish with seven points and Torchia recorded a team-high six draw controls.
 
Ally Culhane added a hat trick and one assist. Kelly Muenster scored two goals, Tori Penders added one goal and Jasey Sanders and Jordan Grey each had one assist to cap the scorers.
 
Rachel Shaw paced the defense with team-highs of six caused turnovers and seven ground balls.
 
Emily Bitka improved to 3-0 in goal after recording five saves.
 
Virginia-Wise was paced by Jesse French and Kristin Gobbi with three goals each. Melanie Reilly took the loss in goal after allowing 13 goals and recording four saves in just shy of 47 minutes in goal. Elsa Girardo played the final 13 minutes and allowed three goals to go along with two saves.
 
Slippery Rock will continue its short southern road trip Monday evening with a 5 p.m. game at Young Harris College in Georgia.
