ASHLAND, Ohio - The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team overcame an eight-point deficit with four minutes left in regulation to earn a 65-63 win against Wayne State University Saturday on day one of the Ashland Thanksgiving Tournament.

The victory improves The Rock's record to 2-3 on the season overall while dropping Wayne State's record to 1-3 in 2018-19.

The Rock's chances of winning seemed dire late as the Warriors opened up an eight-point lead at 59-51 with just 2:55 to play in the fourth quarter. However, SRU proceeded to score 11 straight points to take control of the game, 62-59, with 10 seconds left in regulation.

Slippery Rock's frantic spurt was led by the trio of junior guard
Brooke Hinderliter, sophomore guard
Daeja Quick and redshirt senior guard
Ciara Patterson. Hinderliter accounted for five points over the run with Quick and Patterson supplying three points apiece to give SRU the three-point advantage with just seconds left to play.

SRU employed a fouling strategy in the game's final stages as to not allow WSU the chance to make a game tying 3-pointer. The plan worked, while Wayne State made all four of its free throw attempts during the remainder of the game, Slippery Rock was study from the foul line as well, knocking down three of its final four free throws en route to the two-point victory.

Hinderliter led four Rock players in double figures with a game-best 21 points to go with five rebounds and one block. Hinderliter was 7-for-13 from the field overall and an impressively solid 3-for-5 from 3-point range.

Quick added 13 points while the duo of Patterson and redshirt junior guard
Madison Johnson tallied 11 points apiece with Patterson also dishing out three assists, making two steals and grabbing a season-high four rebounds.

Senior forward
Morgan Henderson pulled down 10 rebounds in addition to scoring six points and coming away with a pair of steals. Off the bench, junior forward
Karington Ketterer corralled five rebounds, scored three points and blocked one shot to pace the reserves.

The Rock's starting lineup of Henderson, Hinderliter, Quick, Patterson and Johnson all played at least 30 minutes Saturday.

For the game, Slippery Rock shot 37.5 percent (24-for-64) from the field overall, 22.7 percent (5-for-22) from 3-point range and a stellar 75 percent (12-for-16) from the foul line.

The Rock's defense was sound all game as they held Wayne State to a 31.3 (20-for-64) field goal percentage while forcing 15 turnovers.

WSU did register a 49-38 advantage in rebounds, but it was Slippery Rock that came away with a 14-9 edge in second chance points despite only registering nine offensive rebounds compared to the Warriors' 16. SRU also led Wayne State in points off of turnovers (15-5).

Nastassja Chambers scored 17 points and Grace George totaled 14 rebounds to lead Wayne State in the loss.

Slippery Rock will close out its time at the Ashland Thanksgiving Tournament when it plays No. 2 Ashland University 3 p.m. Sunday.
