Rock defeated by Mansfield in OT, 2-1

The Slippery Rock field hockey team suffered an overtime loss to Mansfield, 2-1, Tuesday in a PSAC matchup at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team suffered an overtime loss to Mansfield University, 2-1, Tuesday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
 
The loss drops The Rock's record to 5-6 overall and 0-3 in league play. Mansfield's record improves to to 6-5 overall and 2-1 in PSAC play.

Slippery Rock sophomore Kayla Ulrich recorded The Rock's only goal of the matchup off an assist from junior Madison Krajewski. Ulrich recorded a total of five shots against the Mountaineers followed by senior Liz Wolfe, senior Hannah Downing, and freshman Lauren Marks with two each and freshman Jessie Trube, who recorded one.
 
For Mansfield, freshman Olivia Bell recorded her first goal of the season of an assist from senior Gabby Hieber. The overtime goal was scored by junior Megan Griffin off a penalty corner.
 
Tuesday's contest was scoreless for 23 minutes into the first half when Bell fired one in after receiving a pass from Hieber. The Rock had four shots to close the half, none of which were on goal, leaving the score 1-0 Mansfield heading into the break.
 
22 minutes into the second half The Rock tied the game when Ulrich sent a shot past junior goalie Brittany Ryan from Krajewski's pass. Slippery Rock could not get another shot off in the second half, but were able to successfully defend two Mountaineer attempts to take the game to overtime.
 
Both teams struggled to land a shot for the first five minutes of overtime, but to break the tie in the sixth minute Chakon centered a penalty corner to Griffin which allowed her to navigate past sophomore goalie Maddie Murphy and end the game, 2-1.
 
Slippery Rock held advantages over the Mountaineers in total shots (14-11), and shots on goal (6-5). Mansfield led in penalty corners (10-9) and saves (5-3). Murphy finished the game with three saves over 76:45.
 
Up next, Slippery Rock will play at No. 2 East Stroudsburg University 1 p.m. Saturday.
