EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team was defeated by No. 2 East Stroudsburg University today on the road, 4-0. SRU's Hannah Downing tallied the team's only shot on goal in the contest.  
 
ESU's Karly Conway registered a hat trick en route to a 4-0 victory over Slippery Rock after scoring all three of her goals in the second period.
 
The Warriors' Kelli Shapiro tallied a score in the 14th minute to give East Stroudsburg an early lead. Slippery Rock then held ESU's attack throughout the rest of the half to keep the deficit at one.
 
Slippery Rock's first shot was in the 38th minute when Liz Wolfe put one on target, but it was blocked.
 
Five minutes into the second period, Conway got free and tallied a goal to make it a 2-0 advantage in favor of East Stroudsburg.
 
Downing put SRU's first shot on goal moments later, but it was saved by ESU goalkeeper Maddie Richie.
 
In the 47th minute, Conway got a pass from Grace Martini to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead. At 55:37, it was Conway again on a pass from Shapiro to close out scoring and defeat SRU, 4-0.
 
The loss drops The Rock's record to 5-7 overall and 0-4 in league play. East Stroudsburg's record improves to 9-2-overall and 4-0 in PSAC play.
 
Goalkeepers Maddie Murphy and Hannah Nurse split time in the contest. Murphy tallied nine saves while Nurse managed to stop one.
 
Up next, Slippery Rock will play at No. 6 Kutztown University 12 p.m. Oct. 20.
