KUTZTOWN, Pa. - Two second-half goals proved to be too much for the Slippery Rock University field hockey team to overcome in a 3-1 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference loss Saturday at No. 7 Kutztown University.
Â
SRU (5-8, 0-5 PSAC) surrendered an early goal to the nationally ranked Golden Bears (10-4, 3-3 PSAC) in the third minute of Saturday's game, but was able to even the score heading into halftime when sophomore
Kayla Ulrich scored an unassisted goal with just 37 seconds remaining in the first half.
Â
However, Slippery Rock's comeback bid was halted in the second half as Kyra Wozniak, the PSAC's leading goal scorer, netted her 16th goal of the season to put Kutztown back on top, 2-1, at 38:08. Rachel Dusman went on to add an insurance goal in the 66th minute for KU en route to its two-goal victory.
Â
For the match, Kutztown held advantages over The Rock in total shots (17-4), shots on goal (14-4) and penalty corners (5-3). Ulrich accounted for two of SRU's four shots on goal with senior
Liz Wolfe and freshman
Jessie Trube tallying the other attempts.
Â
Ulrich's goal was her team-leading sixth of the season. The score moves her to sixth in program history in career goals with 17 and ninth in career points with 38.
Â
Defensively, Wolfe came away with her PSAC-best fourth defensive save. The stop was the 17th of her career, one away from tying Erin Moran for third place in SRU history.
Â
Goalkeeper
Maddie Murphy played all 70 minutes Saturday, making 10 stops and allowing three goals.
Â
Slippery Rock will look to regroup with a victory against Seton Hill University 4 p.m. Wednesday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
