Rock falls to #1 West Chester, 2-0

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team lost to No. 1 West Chester University, 2-0, Saturday in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference matchup at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

The loss drops The Rock's record to 5-5 overall and 0-2 in league games. The Golden Rams improved to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in the PSAC.

For the matchup, junior Caitlin Kelly and senior Kaitlin Hatch of the Golden Rams recorded one goal each while junior Katie Thompson put down an assist.
 
The Rock's top shooters were Lauren Marks, Hannah Downing, Liz Wolfe, Jessie Trube, and Emily Polakovsky. Each player recorded one shot with Marks being the only one to place one on goal.
 
Saturday's game went scoreless through the first half with both teams playing well defensively. One minute into the second half Kelly took the ball into the circle unassisted and fired a shot past goalie Maddie Murphy. SRU could not answer and the score remained 1-0 for the next 18 minutes.
 
With six minutes remaining on the clock, Hatch centered another shot past Murphy off a pass from Thompson to give WCU a 2-0 lead. The Rock recorded two shots prior to the end of the game, but neither attempt was on target.
 
For the game, West Chester held advantages over The Rock in total shots (19-5), shots on goal (14-1) and penalty corners (15-6). Murphy recorded 12 total saves while West Chester's Marissa Elizardo stopped The Rock's lone shot on goal.
 
Up next, Slippery Rock will look to record a win over Mansfield University to break its three game losing streak 4 p.m. Tuesday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
