Rock rallies for five-set win at Edinboro

The Slippery Rock volleyball team earned a 3-2 (25-16, 23-25, 16-25, 25-16, 15-10) victory on the road Tuesday night at Edinboro.

EDINBORO, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University volleyball team earned a 3-2 (25-16, 23-25, 16-25, 25-16, 15-10) Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Northwest Division victory on the road Tuesday night at Edinboro University.

The victory improves The Rock's record to 10-15 on the season overall and 7-9 in the PSAC. Edinboro drops to 13-13 overall and 6-10 in the PSAC in the loss.

Leading SRU to the win was junior Kaley Fucci, who barely missed out on tying her career-high kill total with a match-best 16 kills to go with three blocks and a pair of aces.

As has been the case for the majority of the season, The Rock's middle hitter duo of senior Shayla Ray and sophomore Erinn Kahoe were once again strong. Ray went for 13 kills on an outstanding .435 attack percentage (13-3-23) while making a pair of blocks. Kahoe produced 11 kills, one ace and three blocks of her own.

Senior Beth Stumpf and freshman Gabby Huck rounded out The Rock's attack. Stumpf notched eight kills, two aces and one block while Huck chipped in six kills and one block. Huck and Stumpf both made 10 digs each.

In addition to passing out a match-best 45 assists and making 11 digs, junior setter Zoe Rivet served four aces. Sophomore libero Jalyn Willard compiled 21 digs for her 13th match of the year with at least 20 digs.

As a team, Slippery Rock held advantages over Edinboro in kills (55-52), attack percentage (.233-.190), digs (61-60) and blocks (7-6). The Fighting Scots edged Slippery Rock in aces (10-9).

Slippery Rock will return home to Morrow Field House to close out the 2018 regular season 7 p.m. Friday against No. 20 Gannon University and 1 p.m. Saturday against Mercyhurst University on Senior Day.

NOTES
- Tuesday's win gives SRU its first season sweep of Edinboro since 2006. After not winning at Edinboro since the aforementioned 2006 season, SRU has now registered wins on the Fighting Scots' home court in each of the last two seasons.

- With two blocks against Edinboro, Ray moved into sole possession of eighth place in program history for blocks in a career with 265.

- Rivet has come away with four aces in a match in three of SRU's last six contests.

- Two of Fucci's top three career kill totals have occurred in The Rock's last four matches; she had 15 against West Liberty on Oct. 23 as well as Tuesday's 16-kill output. Her career-high of 17 kills came earlier in the season against Kutztown.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 – With the opening set tied at 5-5, Slippery Rock ripped off a 13-3 run to take a commanding 18-8 lead over the Fighting Scots that it would never relinquish en route to the 25-16 opening-set victory. Rivet served three aces in the opener while SRU held a team hitting percentage of .538.

Set 2 – SRU held an early 4-1 lead in the second set and would eventually build its lead out to a seemingly safe 22-17 margin. However, the Fighting Scots battled back by ending the set on an 8-1 spurt to even the match by way of a 25-23 second-set victory.

Set 3 – Edinboro was able to carry over its momentum from the end of the second set with a decisive 25-16 victory in the third. With the set tied at 13-13, EU was able to close the win out via a 12-3 run.

Set 4 – With their collective backs against the wall, The Rock was able to stave off the loss and force a fifth set with a 25-16 triumph in the fourth. SRU's fortunes looked bleak early on as Edinboro jumped out to a quick 9-4 advantage, but a 9-4 SRU rally tied the contest at 13-13 and from there the set was all SRU as the visitors posted a 12-3 run to close out the set. Fucci led The Rock's efforts with five kills and two aces in the fourth set.

Set 5 – The fifth set completely belonged to The Rock as SRU trailed on just two occassions in the final set. The highlight of the set was a match-deciding 8-0 run that gave Slippery Rock an 11-5 lead it would never surrender on the way to its 15-10 win. Ray had four kills and one block in the final set while Stumpf served up a pair of aces.
