SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's basketball team saw its chances at a comeback upset victory slip away with 4.7 seconds left when Indiana (Pa.) knocked down a 3-pointer to escape Morrow Field House with a 67-65 win Wednesday night in a matchup between the top two teams in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division.
Â
The Rock trailed by 14 points early in the second half before storming back into the game and taking a 56-54 lead with 8:57 to play. SRU wouldn't trail again until 4.7 seconds left when Anthony Glover hit a contested 3-pointer to give Indiana a 67-65 lead. That basket marked the only points of the entire second half for Glover, who scored 17 in the first half that included four straight free throws after a pair of double technical fouls were called on SRU.
Â
Micah Till had a decent look at a 3-pointer at the buzzer, but it just missed off the back of the iron to give the Crimson Hawks the win. Indiana, which won its second straight game by hitting a shot with less than five seconds left, improved to 17-5 overall and 13-2 in the PSAC West to take a commanding lead over Slippery Rock (17-5, 11-5 PSAC) for the division title. Â
Â
Slippery Rock held Indiana to just 36.7 percent shooting in the game and outrebounded the Crimson Hawks by a 47-35 margin, but couldn't overcome a poor shooting performance at the free throw line. The Rock went just 9-of-17 at the charity stripe (52.9 percent), including missing the front end of a one-and-one that could have extended the lead to three points immediately before Indiana's final possession. The Crimson Hawks took advantage of their attempts at the free throw line, making 12-of-15, and shot better from beyond the 3-point arc than inside it after hitting 11-of-26 shots from deep (42.3 percent).
Â
The Rock didn't fare much better overall, finishing the game shooting just 38.1 percent (24-of-63) after a frigid first half in which they made one of their first 10 attempts and finished the opening 20 minutes shooting 29.0 percent.Â
Â
While Glover hit the game-winner, Wednesday night's game belonged to the best two forwards in the PSAC West in Indiana's Jacobo Diaz and Slippery Rock's
Micah Till, who both put up big numbers. Diaz went for 29 points and 14 rebounds, including 19 points in the second half, and Till recorded his 15th double-double of the year with 17 points and 19 rebounds.
Â
Bruce Spruell finished with 12 points and five assists and
Khyree Wooten and
Merdic Green each finished with 11 points for SRU.
Gabe Mack added six points off the bench during a key run in the second half when Spruell was out of the game for an injury.
Brandon Simmons scored six points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked two shots.
Â
Indiana got 63 of its 67 points from just three players and played a total of only seven men in the game. Diaz and Glover combined for 49 points and Dante Lombardi added 14 points.
Â
Slippery Rock will look to bounce back from its fifth loss of the season when it hosts Seton Hill Saturday in a 3 p.m. game.
