SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team defeated No. 5 Kutztown University, 3-2, Saturday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
The win improved Slippery Rock's overall record to 8-3 and its PSAC record to 3-0 for the season. The loss dropped Kutztown's record to 6-4 overall and 1-2 in the PSAC. The win also marks The Rock's fourth consecutive victory, its longest streak since 2014.
Kayla Ulrich added two goals for Slippery Rock, while
Kailee Krupski added one.
Kayla Mack also recorded two assists in the win.
Five players registered shots for SRU in the game. Ulrich led the team with three, followed by Krupski, Mack,
Brittany Morgan and
Liz Wolfe all with one apiece.
Goalkeepers
Nicole Bream and
Maddie Murphy split time at net for Slippery Rock. Bream started the game, allowing one goal while also recording a save in the first half. Murphy subbed in to start the second half, allowing one goal while recording two saves during her 35 minutes of play.
Morgan Aldinger put Kutztown on the board first, making it 1-0 in the 23rd minute after scoring a goal off a Madison Wampler assist. With less than a minute left in the first half, Ulrich evened the score off an assist from
Kayla Mack.
The second half of play was full of action-packed drama. Ulrich scored her second goal of the day at the 42:52 mark to give SRU a 2-1 lead. Aldinger then added her second goal of the day for the Golden Bears in the 58th minute, evening the score at 2-2. Krupski later made it 3-2 in The Rock's favor after scoring off a Mack assist in the 64th minute. Kutztown had a chance to tie the game late, receiving three penalty corners in the final thirty seconds, with two occurring once the clock had hit double-zero's. But, a Murphy save off an Aldinger shot ultimately ended the game, giving Slippery Rock the win.
Kutztown goalkeeper Chardonnay Hope allowed three goals while recording two saves during her 70 minutes of action.
For the game, Slippery Rock and Kutztown were tied in shots (7-7) and shots on goal (6-6), with Kutztown taking the edge in penalty corners (13-12).
Up next, The Rock will hit the road for a PSAC matchup against Mansfield 4 p.m. Tuesday at Karl Van Norman Field.
