No. 5 Rock falls to Mansfield, 4-0

Fifth-ranked Slippery Rock fell to Mansfield, 4-0, Tuesday in PSAC play at Karl Van Norman Field to drop to 8-4 on the season.

MANSFIELD, Pa. – The fifth-ranked Slippery Rock University field hockey team lost to Mansfield, 4-0, Tuesday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play at Karl Van Norman Field.

The loss dropped Slippery Rock's overall record to 8-4 and gave the team its first PSAC loss of the season, putting The Rock at 3-1 on the year in conference play. The win improved Mansfield's record to 5-5 overall and 1-2 in PSAC play. Of the Rock's four losses this year, two have come at the hands of the Mountaineers.

Mansfield received two goals from Larissa Motts while Mikaila Chakon and Katie Lipski added on score apiece for the Mounties. Emily Sadowksi, Meghan Griffin and Amber Prince also added one assist each for Mansfield.

Nine players recorded shots for The Rock. Kayla Ulrich led the team with four, followed by Abby McKay, Liz Wolfe and Kayla Mack with two shots each. Courtney Page, Alyssa Castle, Sam Geroski, Kailee Krupski and Hannah Simone all added one shot apiece for Slippery Rock.

Goalkeepers Nicole Bream and Maddie Murphy split time at net for The Rock. Bream started the game, but didn't face a shot in her 35 minutes of play. Murphy subbed in for the second half, allowing four goals and recording two saves.

Though the first half was scoreless, Slippery Rock seemed to be in control during the first 35 minutes of action. Going into halftime, Slippery Rock led Mansfield in shots (8-0), shots on goal (4-0) and penalty corners (3-1).

In the second half of play, the Mounties offense came out firing on all cylinders. Motts gave Mansfield its first goal of the game at the 47:18 mark off an assist from Griffin. Less than two minutes later, Chakon scored off a Sadowski assist to make it 2-0. Lipski then made it 3-0 off of a penalty stroke in the 64th minute. Motts capped off the offensive attack in the 66th minute when she added her second goal of the day off an assist from Prince, making it 4-0, and sealing the victory for Mansfield.

Mansfield's goalkeeper Brittany Ryan recorded eight saves during her 70 minutes of shutout play.

For the game, Mansfield led Slippery Rock in shots (18-15) and penalty corners (7-6), but trailed in shots on goal (8-7).

Up next, The Rock will return home for a PSAC matchup against No. 1 Shippensburg 12 p.m. Saturday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
