No. 5 Rock falls to No. 1 Shippensburg, 3-1

Fifth-ranked Slippery Rock fell to No. 1 Shippensburg, 3-1, Saturday in PSAC play at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium to drop to 8-5 on the season.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The fifth-ranked Slippery Rock University field hockey team lost to No. 1 Shippensburg, 3-1, Saturday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

The loss dropped Slippery Rock's record to 8-5 overall and 3-2 in PSAC play. The win improved Shippensburg's record to 10-1 overall and a perfect 5-0 in PSAC play. The game marked the second time that these two teams have met this season, with Shippensburg taking the first game, 5-2.

Shippensburg received goals from Mary Spisak, Kylie Huffman and Emily Barnard in the win. Caitlyn Wink also added an assist for the Raiders. The Rock received its lone goal from Kayla Ulrich.

Three players recorded shots for Slippery Rock in the game. Ulrich led the team with three, followed by Brittany Morgan and Liz Wolfe with one apiece.

Goalkeeper Nicole Bream started and played a majority of the game, with Maddie Murphy subbing in late in the second half. Bream allowed three goals and recorded four saves during her 59:25 minutes of play. Murphy recorded one save after subbing in for the final 10:35 of action.

Shippensburg's Spisak put the Raiders on the board first after scoring a goal in the 25th minute from the right side of the net. Huffman then made it 2-0 after scoring off an assist from Wink out of a penalty corner at the 30:36 mark. Just over a minute later, Ulrich answered with a goal of her own after scoring on a deep shot from the center of the circle. In the second half of play, Barnard added another Shippensburg goal to make the score 3-1 and lead the Raiders to the eventual victory.

Shippensburg goalkeeper Ally Mooney allowed one goal while recording two saves during her 70 minutes of action.

For the game, Shippensburg led Slippery Rock in shots (13-5), shots on goal (8-4) and penalty corners (8-7).

Up next, The Rock will hit the road for a PSAC matchup against Seton Hill 4 p.m. Wednesday at Dick's Sporting Goods Field.
