Rock tops Indiana (Pa.), 2-1

Slippery Rock beat Indiana (Pa.), 2-1, Wednesday night in PSAC play at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium to improve to 7-3 on the season.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team defeated Indiana University of Pennsylvania, 2-1, Wednesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

The win improved Slippery Rock's record to 7-3 on the year, while the loss dropped Indiana (Pa.) to 4-5 for the season. The Rock's seven wins tops its total from the past two seasons, with Slippery Rock winning six games in both 2015 and 2016. Slippery Rock is also currently on a three game winning streak, which matches its longest win streak since 2014.

Abby McKay and Alyssa Castle were The Rock's goal scorers on the night, with Brittany Morgan recording the assist for each score.

Seven players recorded shots for Slippery Rock in the game. Castle and Kayla Ulrich led the team with two each, while McKay, Hannah Downing, Liz Wolfe, Kayla Mack and Courtney Page all added one apiece.

Goalkeepers Nicole Bream and Maddie Murphy split time at net for The Rock. Bream started the game, recording three saves while allowing no goals during her 35 minutes of play. Murphy subbed in for the second half, allowing one goal and recording three saves.

Slippery Rock got on the board early after McKay scored off an assist from Morgan to make it 1-0 at the 8:12 mark. The Rock's offense then went silent for the remainder of the first half, going without another shot for the rest of the period. On the other side, Slippery Rock's defense held strong for a majority of the game. It wasn't until the 56th minute that IUP recorded a goal after Kalista Gioglio scored off of a penalty corner. The game looked like it might have been headed for overtime until Castle scored off another Morgan assist in the 67th minute to give The Rock a 2-1 lead and ultimately the victory.

IUP goalkeeper Alyssa Lerda allowed two goals while recording five saves during her 70 minutes of action.

For the game, Slippery Rock and Indiana tied in shots (9-9), shots on goal (7-7) and penalty corners (12-12).

Up next, The Rock continues its home stand with a PSAC matchup against No. 5 Kutztown 12 p.m. Saturday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
