Rock drops nail biter to Gannon, 1-0

The Slippery Rock women’s soccer team lost a tough PSAC match to Gannon, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at James Egli Field.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference contest to Gannon University Sunday afternoon at James Egli Field.
 
The Rock received contributions on offense from Madison Johnson, Tess Keeley, Tyler Spence and Brooke Testa, who all tallied one shot on goal apiece. SRU goalkeeper Kylie Downs registered 10 saves on 11 chances.
 
The loss dropped SRU's record to 4-3-1 overall and 4-2-1 in league play, while Gannon improves to 5-1-1 overall and 5-1-1 in conference games.
 
GU kept the pressure on early at 4:57 when Gannon's, Kayla Bevacqua fired a shot that was saved by Downs. Just two minutes later, Hannah Marchant tried to give GU a lead with a shot, but Downs made the save.
 
SRU's best chance to break through in the first half was at 39:28 when Spence let a shot rip toward the goal, but goalkeeper Danitza Indacochea made the save. Both teams remained level at 0-0 into the break.
 
In the second period, The Rock nearly took the lead at 57:38 when Taylor Gunn sent a corner into the box that Shannon McIntyre headed toward the net, but it went wide.
 
At 63:59, Testa fired a corner kick into the box that Johnson headed toward the goal. However, Indacochea made the save.
 
It was not until 86:49 that Gannon broke through when Emily Cekella headed a shot into the net off a free kick from Sarah Kaiser. The Golden Knights took the lead, 1-0.
 
SRU was unable to muster any other scoring chances in the last three minutes and the Golden Knights held on for the win.
 
The Rock is back in action against Seton Hill in a conference game 4 p.m. Wednesday at James Egli Field.
