Rock blanks Bellarmine, 2-0

Slippery Rock head coach Julie Swiney collected her 50th win at SRU after The Rock defeated Bellarmine, 2-0, Sunday in a non-conference matchup at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team beat Bellarmine University, 2-0, Sunday in non-conference play at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
 
The victory gave Slippery Rock head coach Julie Swiney her 50th win at SRU. Swiney has led The Rock since 2010, and her 50 wins are the second most in SRU field hockey program history. She was honored as the PSAC Coach of the Year in 2012, and has helped The Rock qualify for the PSAC Tournament on three occasions.
 
The win improved Slippery Rock's record to 3-2 for the season, and dropped Bellarmine to 1-4 on the year.
 
Freshman Courtney Page scored a first half goal for Slippery Rock, her first of the year, off an assist from Kayla Ulrich. Ulrich later recorded her third goal of the season after scoring in the closing minute of the game.
 
Seven players tallied shots for SRU. Ulrich led the team with five, followed by Abby McKay, Liz Wolfe and Kayla Mack with two apiece. Page, Kailee Krupski and Allison Martin all registered one shot for The Rock as well.
 
After splitting time with Nicole Bream through the first four games, goalkeeper Maddie Murphy received her first start for The Rock, going the distance for a shutout victory. Murphy recorded two saves during her 70 minutes of play.
 
Slippery Rock recorded each of their goals near the closing minutes of both halves. Page put The Rock on the board at the 33:38 mark of the first half after receiving a short drop-off pass from Ulrich. Ulrich then put the nail in the coffin when she scored her goal with just 12 seconds remaining in regulation, putting The Rock up 2-0 and sealing the victory.
 
Bellarmine goalkeeper Heather Gregory allowed two goals while recording 10 saves during her 70 minutes of play.
 
For the game, SRU led Bellarmine in shots (14-6), shots on goal (13-3) and penalty corners (8-6).
 
Up next, Slippery Rock hits the road to face Washington and Jefferson College 7 p.m. Wednesday for a non-conference matchup at Cameron Stadium.
