Rock tops Washington & Jefferson, 1-0

Slippery Rock beat Washington & Jefferson, 1-0, Wednesday night in a non-conference matchup at Cameron Stadium to improve to 4-2 on the season.

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team beat Washington & Jefferson College, 1-0, Wednesday in non-conference play at Cameron Stadium.

The win improves Slippery Rock's record to 4-2 for the year, while W&J drops to 1-3 on the season.

Freshman Kayla Ulrich recorded her fourth goal of the season during the win, and continues to climb up The Rock's freshman record book. Her four goals through just six games ties her for third in program history.

Seven players recorded shots for The Rock. Abby McKay led the team with three shots, followed by Ulrich, Sam Geroski and Madison Krajewski with two. Liz Wolfe, Kailee Krupski and Brittany Morgan also added one shot a piece for Slippery Rock.

Goalkeeper Maddie Murphy received her second start of the season and once again shutout the opposing teams offense. She was helped out by her defense, who allowed W&J to register just four shots, none of which were on goal.

Both teams struggled to get into a rhythm offensively for a majority of the game. It wasn't until the 61:24 mark that The Rock finally got on the board when Ulrich scored a goal from the right side of the circle. The goal ended up being the only score of the game, giving The Rock the 1-0 victory.

Washington & Jefferson goalkeeper Karlie Baran allowed one goal while recording five saves during her 70 minutes of play.

For the game, The Rock led W&J in shots (12-4), shots on goal (4-0) and penalty corners (7-4).

Up next, Slippery Rock hits the road again to face No. 3-ranked Shippensburg University 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon at Robb Sports Complex.
