Rock ties Edinboro in season-opener

Slippery Rock women’s soccer tied Edinboro in its season opener, 2-2, Thursday evening at Sox Harrison Stadium. Madison Johnson scored SRU’s first goal of the year.

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team's first game of the season at Edinboro University ended in a 2-2 draw Thursday evening at Sox Harrison Stadium.
 
The Rock (0-0-1) scored the first two goals of the game, but Edinboro (0-0-1) answered back with two of their own in the last fifteen minutes of regulation.
 
Slippery Rock recorded goals from Johnson and Julianna Esposito, while Brooke Testa and Tess Keeley provided assists.
 
Johnson's goal was the first of her Slippery Rock career. At 27:57, Testa fed her a pass putting her in position from about 15-yards out to send one into the back of the net, giving Slippery Rock the early 1-0 lead.
 
Shortly after halftime at 61:15, it was Keeley who sent a pass to the right side giving Esposito space to put a shot into the left corner of the net giving Slippery Rock a 2-0 lead. It was Esposito's second goal of her career and first of the season. Keeley's assist was her first of 2017 and 13th of her career, tying her with Julie Kirwan (2004-05) for 16th all-time in SRU women's soccer history.
 
Edinboro's Danielle Chatten got the Fighting Scots on the board at 78:40 when Rebecca Mans fed her a pass in front of the net from about 15-yards out.
 
Just six minutes later, Sarah Reidy tied the game at 2-2 off a corner kick that was sent into the box from Coleen Brodman.
 
The Rock's last chance to win came in overtime in the 102nd minute when Maddy Tletski sent a shot on goal, but it was saved by EU goalkeeper Sarah Baskey.
 
Slippery Rock goalkeeper Kylie Downs made five saves on seven shots on goal.
 
SRU held advantages in shots (19-15) and shots on goal (11-7).
 
Slippery Rock remains on the road to play a non-conference game at West Virginia Wesleyan University 2 p.m. Saturday.
