SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.- The Slippery Rock University softball team suffered two losses to Gannon University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action Monday afternoon.
Gannon swept The Rock with wins of 4-3 and 4-3.
The losses drop Slippery Rock to 9-16 overall and 3-5 in the PSAC West. Gannon improves to 20-7 on the year and 7-1 in conference action.
GAME ONE: Gannon 4, Slippery Rock 3
Slippery Rock took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when
Emily Nagle scored following
Megan Brown's bunt. The Rock added to its lead in the second inning when
Allie Fischer recorded an RBI single to third base that scored
Nicole Siciliano from third.
Gannon responded in the third inning with a three-run homer by Kherrin Morgan to give the Golden Knights a 3-2 lead. SRU tied it up in the bottom of that inning when
Lauren Hawley scored Nagle on an RBI to left field.
Morgan put the Golden Knights up for good in the fifth inning with an RBI shot to right field.
Fischer led The Rock offensively with two hits and an RBI.
Carly DeRose took the loss for Slippery Rock in a complete game. She struck out five and surrendered six hits.
GAME TWO: Gannon 4, Slippery Rock 3
Gannon took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Morgan registered an RBI double down the right field line.
Slippery Rock scored three runs in the sixth inning, sparked by Nagle's single up the middle. The next at-bat, Brown singled to the shortstop and advanced Nagle to second.
Caitlin Baxter laid down a bunt and Gannon overthrew first base to give SRU two runs on Nagle's and Brown's runs. Baxter got all the way to third on the error, setting up Hawley to score her on an RBI single up the middle to make it 3-1.
With two outs in the seventh, Gannon rallied to score three runs on three hits and one fielding error.
Brooke Dawson got the loss for The Rock, after she struck out five and allowed eight hits.
Slippery Rock will continue PSAC West action this weekend, starting at Edinboro Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
