Rock splits with Edinboro

Slippery Rock split a pair of games with PSAC West rival Edinboro Friday afternoon.

EDINBORO, Pa.- The Slippery Rock University softball team split a pair of games with Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division rival Edinboro University Friday afternoon.

Edinboro claimed the first game of the doubleheader 3-2, before Slippery Rock went on to win the second game 3-2 in eight innings.  

Slippery Rock moves to 10-17 overall and 4-6 in the PSAC West, while Edinboro is 13-13 overall and 4-6 in the conference.

GAME ONE: Edinboro 3, Slippery Rock 2
The Rock got out to a one-run lead in the top of the third inning when Caitlin Baxter scored Emily Nagle on an RBI single up the middle.

The Fighting Scots scored all three of their runs in the fourth inning. Brooke Callaghan and Olivia Jankowski started the inning with back-to-back hits. Both runners advanced two bases each on wild pitches, with Callaghan reaching home on the second pitch. Jankowski stole home to give the Fighting Scots a 2-0 lead, while the third unearned run came on a Slippery Rock fielding error.

The Rock got one run back in the sixth inning when Hannah Nestor had an RBI single to score Caitlyn MacKelvey, who pinch ran for Kailey Myers after a double to right field.  

Offensively, Nagle and Megan Brown had two hits apiece in Game One, while Baxter and Nestor each recorded RBIs.

Carly DeRose took the loss for Slippery Rock after pitching 4.1 innings and allowing just two hits. DeRose struck out six and walked four batters. Paige Flore pitched 1.2 innings of relief and gave up two hits.

GAME TWO: Slippery Rock, 3, Edinboro 2 (Eight Innings)
Baxter got The Rock out to a 1-0 lead again in Game Two when she scored Nagle on an RBI single to centerfield in the third inning.

Edinboro tied things up at 1-1 when they scored on an error in the fourth inning.

Slippery Rock went ahead 2-1 in the fifth inning when Lauren Hawley scored Brown on an RBI double to left field.

The Fighting Scots tied things up again in the sixth inning when they once again scored on a SRU fielding error.

Allie Fischer hit the game-winning RBI double in the top of the eighth inning. Brooke Dawson sat down the Fighting Scots 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning.

Brown was 3-for-3 with three stolen bases in Game Two. Myers had two hits, while Baxter, Hawley and Fischer all registered RBI.

Dawson earned her seventh win of the season after striking out five batters and allowing five hits.

Slippery Rock welcomes California (Pa.) to the SRU Softball Complex for a PSAC West doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
