Rock streak ends with 5-3 loss at Bloomsburg

Slippery Rock posted a 17-10 advantage in shots on goal, but ran into a hot goaltender in suffering a 5-3 defeat at Bloomsburg Saturday.

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season with a 5-3 defeat on the road at Bloomsburg University Saturday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action.

The Rock drops to 7-1 overall and remains in first place in the PSAC standings with a 3-1 league record. Bloomsburg improves to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in league games.

The Huskies scored the first goal of the game less than two minutes in, but Slippery Rock answered right back less than a minute later to even the score.

Bloomsburg put together a two-goal run to take a 3-1 lead with 19:05 to play in the first half, but again SRU responded just over one minute later to cut it to 3-2.

Neither team could find the back of the net for more than 15 minutes before Bloomsburg scored with 1:16 left in the half to lead 4-2 at the break.

The Huskies added one more goal with 16:25 to play and Slippery Rock couldn't put together a comeback in a low-scoring affair.

The Rock finished the game with advantages of 23-17 in shots and 22-19 in ground balls, but Bloomsburg posted a 6-4 edge in draw controls and the Huskies goalie, Angela DiPasquale, made 14 saves, including 12 in the second half.

Tia Torchia scored two of Slippery Rock's goals and Caitlynn Palladino had the other goal. Palladino finished with a game-high eight shots and Torchia posted six shots, but solving DiPasquale proved to be difficult.

Emily Bitka made five saves on 10 shots on goal for SRU.

Bloomsburg got timely scoring with goals from five different players, which was more than enough to support the effort of its keeper.

Slippery Rock will look to bounce back next week when it hosts three games in a stretch of four days from Wednesday through Saturday.
