Rock beats Augustana, falls to Fairmont State

The Slippery Rock softball team won one game and lost another on Day Two of the NTC Tournament Sunday in Leesburg, Florida.

LEESBURG, Fla.- The Slippery Rock University softball team won one game and lost one game on the second day of the National Training Center Tournament Sunday in Leesburg, Florida.

The Rock (3-6) earned an 8-2 win over Augustana in the afternoon before Faimont State rallied to beat SRU 5-3 in the nightcap.

GAME ONE: Slippery Rock 8, Augustana 2
Slippery Rock got out to an early 1-0 lead when Caitlin Baxter belted a home run over the fence in left field on The Rock's first at-bat of the game.

In the third inning, Megan Brown stole two bases and scored on a throwing error to put The Rock up 2-0.

Augustana's Christina Pickett hit an RBI double and Kaylea Schorr recorded an RBI single to tie the game up at 2-2 in the fourth inning.

With two outs in the fifth, Alexa Guglielmino sparked a three-run inning with a single to left field. Baxter doubled to left center, advancing Guglielmino to third and setting her up to score on Brown's RBI single to right on the next at-bat. Emily Nagle put The Rock up 5-2 when she scored Brown and Baxter on a double to left center.

The Rock had another two-out lightning inning in the sixth, started off by Amanda Brush's infield single. Rookie Machala Andrews crushed a double to deep left center on the first at-bat of her career to score Brush. Nicole Siciliano doubled down the left field line to score Andrews and put SRU ahead 7-2.

Slippery Rock scored another run in the seventh inning when Lauren Hawley hit an RBI single to center field to score Brown. Brooke Dawson fought back from a bases loaded jam with two straight outs to hold Augustana scoreless in the final inning.

Baxter's home run and double highlighted Game One. Brown also had two hits, three runs and three stolen bases. Eight Slippery Rock players collected hits against the Vikings.

Dawson (1-1) earned the win for The Rock after she struck out three and allowed just five hits in a complete game.

GAME TWO: Fairmont State 5, Slippery Rock 3
In the nightcap, pitcher Carly DeRose did not allow a hit until the fourth inning when Addie Fullen homered to left field to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead.

SRU responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning, started by Kailey Myers' RBI single to left field that scored Nagle, who reached on a single down the right side. Caitlyn MacKelvey, who pinch ran for Hawley after she got a hit, got home on a wild pitch. Siciliano scored Myers on single to center field to give The Rock a two-run lead.

Fairmont State's Abby Burgess put her team up for good in the sixth inning with a three-run double to left center. The Falcons got another run in the seventh inning on a Samantha Hoban home run.

DeRose (2-2) recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts in the loss. DeRose's 11 strikeouts is the most for an SRU player since Emily Lobdell's 11 at Clarion in 2014.

The Rock will face Wayne State (6 p.m.) and St. Cloud State (8:30 p.m.) Monday evening at Hancock Park in Clermont, Florida.
