EDINBORO, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team lost to Edinboro University on the road Wednesday at McComb Fieldhouse, 90-46, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division contest.
Slippery Rock (9-18, 6-15 PSAC West) was led by
LeeAnn Gibson, who came off the bench to score a career-high 11 points and grab six rebounds. Gibson went 3-for-4 from field and was a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line.
C.C. Dixon also finished in double figures with 10 points to go with seven rebounds and one block. Five of Dixon's rebounds came on the offensive glass. Dixon has now scored at least 10 points in seven of Slippery Rock's last nine games.
Brooke Hinderliter scored eight points and pulled down six rebounds while
Mallory Heinle chipped in seven points as well. Hinderliter had two offensive rebounds to increase her season total to 70, the eighth most by a player in Rock single-season history.
Morgan Henderson registered eight rebounds and blocked a pair of shots while
Krista Pietropola had six rebounds to round out The Rock's top performers.
SRU struggled to find its rhythm all night, finishing the game shooting just 24.6 percent (14-of-57) from the field overall and 11.1 percent (1-of-9) from 3-point range while committing 23 turnovers.
Slippery Rock, which entered the game as the leading foul shooting team in the PSAC, went 17-for-23 (73.9 percent) from the free throw line in another solid night at the charity stripe. SRU also held a 45-39 edge in rebounds over the Fighting Scots. Included in the 45 rebounds were 19 offensive boards, the third highest total for SRU this year.
The Rock and Fighting Scots (20-7, 16-5 PSAC West) traded baskets over the first three minutes of the first quarter with SRU eventually sneaking out to a 5-4 lead with 6:45 remaining in the period. Slippery Rock got out to the early lead thanks to a 3-pointer by Pietropola and a jumper by Henderson. However, Edinboro proceeded to end the opening quarter on a 19-4 run to take a commanding 23-9 lead over SRU into the second quarter.
Things went from bad to worse in the second quarter for Slippery Rock as the Fighting Scots scored 13 consecutive points to extend its lead out to 27 points at 36-9 before SRU finally scored its first points of the quarter with just under four minutes left until halftime. Edinboro closed out the opening half on an 11-4 run to take a 47-14 lead into the break.
SRU played much better in the second half, but the game was well out of reach as Edinboro closed out the 90-46 home win.
Katie Fischer led the Edinboro attack with 26 points, eight assists and four rebounds. Edinboro made 13 3-pointers on 29 attempts (44.8 percent) while also shooting 45.6 percent (31-of-68) from the field overall and 83.3 percent (15-of-18) from the foul line. EU took excellent care of the basketball with just eight turnovers.
Slippery Rock concludes its 2016-17 season Saturday at Pitt-Johnstown. Tipoff from Johnstown, Pennsylvania is scheduled for 1 p.m.
