GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University football team set multiple offensive records on the way to a 77-38 victory Saturday at Seton Hill University to close out Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division play from Offutt Field.
Â
The Rock improved to 8-2 overall and 5-2 in PSAC West action after putting up a school record 795 yards of total offense, a number that was more than 800 before lost yardage for kneel downs at the end of the game. Seton Hill remained winless on the year to drop to 0-10 overall and 0-7 in league games.
Â
Slippery Rock also got a record-setting day from wide receiver
Marcus Johnson, who broke the program's single-season record for all-purpose yardage with seven catches for 115 yards to bring his season total to 1,894 all-purpose yards, topping the former single-season record of 1,839 yards, set by Josh Kniess in 2005. Johnson caught one TD pass officially, but had two other TD passes and a 92-yard kickoff return touchdown all called back for penalties.
Â
The Rock threw for 403 yards and ran for 392 yards to account for the 795 yards of offense. SRU scored touchdowns on every offensive possession of the day but two, one that resulted in a turnover on downs in SHU territory on the second drive of the day and the other being the final drive, when SRU took a knee inside the SHU five-yard line. Slippery Rock never punted once in the game.
Â
Seton Hill had a stellar offensive day as well, racking up 633 total yards of offense with 300 rushing yards and 333 passing yards, but couldn't keep pace with The Rock offensive output.
Â
Tanner Garry bounced back from a shaky outing in the rain last week with a dominant game from the QB position for SRU. He completed 24-of-30 passes for 326 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions in less than three quarters of work.
Andrew Koester was also strong in a relief role, completing 5-of-7 passes for 77 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions.
Â
Milly Raye, who missed the game two weeks ago and has been nursing an injury, returned to form in a big way with 291 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns. He caught a career-high 12 passes for a career-high 181 yards and two touchdowns and also added an 85-yard punt return for a touchdown.
Â
Isiah Neely paced a strong ground game as The Rock rushed for a season-high 392 yards. Neely went for 158 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries for an average of 10.5 yards per touch.
Braden Fochtman added 99 yards on 12 carries, while
Chacar Berry rushed for 92 yards and one score on 13 carries and
Nassir Weaver closed it out with 48 yards and one score on eight carries.
Â
Dakota Clanagan,
Austin Scott and
Zach Cirillo all caught one TD pass on the day as nine receivers combined for 403 yards. Cirillo also forced a fumble on a kickoff return that was recovered by
Tavarus Sample in the third quarter. Garry connected with Scott on the next play to put the game well out of reach.
Â
The Rock defense was paced by
Kyle Hall with seven solo tackles and one tackle for loss.
Khadir Roberts added six tackles and one interception.
Dylan Whiteman,
Trysten McDonald and
Chad Kuhn all had one tackle for loss.
Â
Seton Hill was paced by Jarvis McClam, who rushed for 291 yards and three touchdowns on just 11 carries. He had touchdown runs of 75 and 77 yards on the way to averaging 26.5 yards per carry and also caught four passes for 52 yards to finish with a game-high 343 all-purpose yards.
Â
Christian Strong completed 24-of-37 passes for 333 yards with one TD and one INT. Ty George caught four passes for 72 yards, while John Makell IV added four catches for 54 yards and Brian Ingram caught two passes for 59 yards and one score.
Â
Slippery Rock will now turn its focus to the final week of the regular season and a trip to Kutztown next Saturday for a noon kickoff. A Rock win in that game would likely lock up a third trip to the NCAA playoffs in the last four years.
