Rock drops 2OT thriller at Shippensburg, 1-0

The Slippery Rock men’s soccer team dropped a double-overtime thriller 1-0 at Shippensburg Saturday afternoon to close the season.

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team lost 1-0 in double-overtime Saturday afternoon at Shippensburg University to close out the season.

After playing two halves of scoreless soccer, SRU and Shippensburg went into overtime. With 33 seconds left to play in the second overtime period, the Raiders put one into the net for the late score to seal a victory.

Shippensburg almost took the lead early after a header shot from Justin Blumberg went wide at 1:07.

At 5:15, SRU almost took an early lead when Justin Minda fired one on target that Shippensburg goalkeeper Matt Harder saved.

In the 23rd minute, Tyler McCarthy headed a ball just wide of the net. Both teams entered halftime scoreless.

Jan Striewe tested Rock goalkeeper Matt Hunsberger in the 66th minute when he fired a shot that was stopped.

Sean Tinney almost made it a 1-0 lead for SRU at 76:19 when he sent one toward the net that Harder stopped.

With a minute to play in regulation, Minda put one on target, but Harder made another stop to send the game into overtime.

Just two minutes into overtime, Oakley nearly won the game when he put one on target, but Harder made the save. However, both teams remained scoreless, and the game went into double-overtime.

With 33 seconds remaining in the match, Shippensburg's Colin Marks got free and fired one into the net for the score to win the game, 1-0.

Minda and Oakley recorded two shots on goal apiece. Slippery Rock tied Shippensburg in shots on goal, 6-6.

Goalkeepers Steven Rerick and Hunsberger split time and totaled a combined five saves.

With the loss, Slippery Rock finishes the season with a 5-10-3 overall record and a 3-6-2 league mark. Shippensburg improves to 7-8-2 overall and 5-6-0 in conference games.
