SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team was shutout by No. 2 East Stroudsburg University, 3-0, Saturday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
The loss dropped Slippery Rock to 10-7 overall and 5-4 in PSAC play. The win improved East Stroudsburg to 13-3 overall and 6-2 in PSAC play.
Paige Harrold, Melanie Shambaugh and Kelli Shapiro all recorded one goal apiece for the Warriors. Harrold and Sara Ober also added assists in the win.
Four players recorded shots for The Rock.
Kayla Ulrich led the team with three, followed by
Kayla Mack with two.
Alyssa Castle and
Kailee Krupski each added one shot apiece.
Goalkeepers
Nicole Bream and
Maddie Murphy split time in cage for Slippery Rock. Bream started the game, recording two saves while allowing no goals in 35 minutes of action. Murphy subbed in for the second half, allowing three goals and recording six saves during 35 minutes of play.
The first half of action saw very even play from both teams, with Slippery Rock and East Stroudsburg heading into the break scoreless. At the half, Slippery Rock led in shots (5-4) and penalty corners (4-2). In the second half of play, Harrold put the Warriors on the board in the 47th minute off of an Ober assist. Shambaugh then made it 2-0 in the 63rd minute after scoring off of a deep shot from the center of the circle. Less than three minutes later, Shapiro scored off of a Harrold assist to give East Stroudsburg a 3-0 lead and the eventual victory.
ESU goalkeeper Halle Frisco recorded four saves during her 70 minutes of shutout play.
For the game, East Stroudsburg led Slippery Rock in shots (16-7), shots on goal (11-4) and penalty corners (5-4).
Up next, The Rock hits the road for a PSAC matchup against No. 3 Millersville 12 p.m. Saturday at Biemesderfer Stadium.
