ERIE, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team tied Mercyhurst University 2-2 Wednesday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference match.
Madison Johnson and
Skye Kramer each tallied a score.
Slippery Rock scored early in the first period and took its 1-0 lead into the half. After a foul in the box, Mercyhurst scored a penalty kick goal to even the score, 1-1. The Rock took the lead after a Mercyhurst turnover, however the Lakers would score off another penalty kick to level the score, 2-2. Neither team was able to take advantage in overtime and the game ended in a draw.
After the tie, Slippery Rock's record moves to 9-4-2 overall and 9-3-2 in league play. The Lakers' record now sits at 4-7-4 overall and 3-7-3 in PSAC games.
At 12:52, SRU got on the board right away when
Brooke Testa sent a free kick into the box that Johnson headed into the net for the score. It was Johnson's fourth goal of 2017 and Testa's team-leading seventh assist of the year.
Slippery Rock looked to make it a 2-0 game at 33:41 when
Kaitlyn Barackman got loose, but Mercyhurst goalkeeper Vilde Wold made the save.
Testa nearly gave The Rock a two-goal lead again at 37:14 when she fired one, but it was saved by Wold and SRU took its 1-0 advantage into the break.
Just 13 minutes after halftime, Mercyhurst's Maya Bauer sent a corner into the box. After a foul, Emilie Bock was awarded a free kick that she did not miss. The Lakers tied the game, 1-1.
In the 62nd minute, SRU answered back when Kramer was able to steal the ball and get open for a shot that she deposited into the net to make it a 2-1 game. It was Kramer's fourth goal of 2017, which ties her for the team lead along with Testa and Johnson.
Thirty minutes later, at 82:27, a foul in the box gave Bock a penalty kick opportunity again. Bock fired it past goalkeeper
Kylie Downs to tie the game, 2-2, and help send the contest into overtime.
The Rock nearly won the game at 96:21 when
Maddy Tletski sent a shot that Wold saved.
The Lakers nearly got the victory at 99:04 when Bauer sent one on target that Downs knocked down for the save.
In the second overtime period,
Sofia Harrison nearly won the game when she fired a shot that Wold saved. Tletski also sent a shot on target in the period, but Wold was there to make the stop.
Mercyhurst did not register a shot in the second overtime period and the game ended in a 2-2 draw.
The Rock outshot Mercyhurst 22-13 and held the advantage in shots on goal, 16-6. SRU's 22 shots and 16 shots on goal are its highest output in a single game in both categories this season.
Up next, Slippery Rock will return home for a conference matchup against West Chester 1 p.m. Saturday. It will also be SRU's Senior Day. Before the game, The Rock will honor the careers of seniors
