SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team earned an overtime victory against Mercyhurst University, 1-0, Tuesday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
The win improved Slippery Rock's record to 10-6 overall and 5-3 in PSAC play. The loss dropped Mercyhurst to 6-8 overall and 2-5 in PSAC play.
With just two games remaining, The Rock's 10 wins clinches an above .500 record for the first time since 1998, when SRU finished the season 8-6. The 10 wins are also tied for the second-highest total in program history, though season lengths have fluctuated in past years.
Kailee Krupski scored the game's lone goal, with
Kayla Mack adding an assist.
Mack also recorded her team-leading fifth defensive save of the season in the victory. The five defensive saves is tied for seventh in program history for a season, and marks the third consecutive year Mack has hit that total. She has now recorded 18 career defensive saves, which is tied for second in program history.
Nine players recorded shots for The Rock.
Kayla Ulrich led the team with three, followed by Krupski,
Liz Wolfe and
Allison Grant with two each.
Hannah Downing,
Alyssa Castle,
Sam Geroski,
Hannah Simone and
Courtney Page all added one shot apiece.
Goalkeepers
Nicole Bream and
Maddie Murphy split time in cage for Slippery Rock. Bream started the game, but did not face a shot on goal in her 35 minutes of action. Murphy subbed in for the second half and played into overtime, collecting three saves while allowing no goals in over 41 minutes of play.
The game was a defensive stalemate throughout, though The Rock seemed to be in control early. At the end of the first half, Slippery Rock led in shots (8-1), shots on goal (6-1) and penalty corners (5-1). Mercyhurst played a much tighter game in the next period, closing out the second half of play with advantages in shots (5-3) and penalty corners (9-4).
In overtime, Slippery Rock seemed to ramp up its offensive attack, recording three shots in under seven minutes of play. Krupski's score came in the 77th minute off of an assist by Mack out of a penalty corner play, giving The Rock a 1-0 lead and the victory.
Mercyhurst goalkeeper Victoria Triaga allowed one goal while recording nine saves in her 76:41 minutes of play.
For the game, The Rock led the Lakers in shots (14-6), shots on goal (11-4) and penalty corners (11-10).
Up next, Slippery Rock hosts a PSAC matchup against No. 2 East Stroudsburg 12 p.m. Saturday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
